Winter Beer Season – Holiday Beers Have Landed

Posted by Tom Gable Posted on Nov - 08 - 2011

Is it too early to talk about Christmas? Perhaps, but it’s not to early to drink beer, that’s a year round celebration! This time of year is unique to the beer world, because all our favorite breweries release their fall and winter ales. We have our shipments in and some newbies to the winter line up.

If you respond to this email you can get one of every winter beer in this email for $94.99! (Excluding Friek mention, AV cans not bottles)

That includes gift packs and 6 packs, all 12 items! Happy flippin’ Holidays!

Let’s start with the gift packs.

Samuel Smith Selection box:

This “Beerlover’s Dream” features a Victorian pint (18.7 oz. or 550 ml) of each of three classic Samuel Smith ales: the Celebrated Oatmeal Stout, Nut Brown Ale, and India Ale. It also includes an authentic Samuel Smith pint glass, two “Rose of Yorkshire,” coasters, and a brochure listing and explaining the world’s classic brewing styles. It comes packed in a black & metallic gold custom box. This email is a Samuel Smith Sammich, read to the end to see what I mean.

Whats inside:

  • Oatmeal Stout – Oatmeal and malted barley brewed together into an opaque, chocolate color with a creamy head.
  • Nut Brown Ale – Creamy head, dry; flavors of aromatic hops melded with a hint of nuttiness from dark malts.
  • India Ale – Amber-colored, restrained maltiness, very hoppy.
  • Victorian Pint – 18.7 oz official Samuel Smith Glass
  • Coasters – Two authentic Rose of Yorkshire coasters.

Lindemans Gift Box:

The Lindemans gift box includes 1-12oz bottle of raspberry lambic (frambois) and 1-12oz bottle of apple (pomme) lambic.

Also included is a flute style glass with the Lindemans logo and gold rim.

Whats inside:

Framboise – Magnificent aroma, delicate palate of raspberries with undertones of fruity acidity; elegant, sparkling clean taste.

Pomme – Smooth, light body with the fresh flavor of real apples and a light green-apple tartness.

Then let’s talk about six packs…

Fireside Chat

Next up isn’t exactly a gift pack but it does come in a box.

21st Amendment Brewery has released it’s winter beer “Fireside Chat”.

Great packaging on this. 6 cans of beer neatly packaged in a box that reminds me of “It’s a Wonderful Life” or a Norman Rockwell painting.

This is what the brewery says:

Like FDR’s Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

Next up is a newbie to our neck of the woods…

Odell Isolation Ale: 6 pack

Available each winter at the first of November (first time in Idaho) this copper colored winter warmer is brewed with imported premium malts from England. Isolation Ale has a rich and slightly sweet malt flavor that is complimented by a subtle spice hop finish, and pours a creamy head like frost on a pumpkin.

Only $11.99 Club members $10.79 Order here.

*** Coming Soon***
While we are on the topic of Odell, Here at Enoteca we are expecting the arrival of

Odell’s Friek:

A 750ml bottle, FRIEK is an evolution, an imaginative amalgamation invented by our brewers. Multiple kriek Lambic style ales are fermented with wild yeast and tart cherries and then moved into oak barrles to age and sour taking on the cherry flavors. As the beer matures, raspberries from Schroyer Family Farms in Fort Collins are handpicked and readied for the beer. The fresh raspberries are added immediately prior to the final blending. The sweet and tart flavors mingle on the tongue with a sparkling dry finish. Coming soon…

Place request today. We expect it to be about $17, but final pricing isn’t in yet.

(Note: Friek isn’t part of the $94.99 winter beer package, because it’s not a winter seasonal, and we don’t know what it costs.)

Fish Tale Organic Winter Fish Ale: 6 pack

This is the Cascadian ale brewed for the season of celebrations. Very pale and full bodied with a rich flavor imparted by Pale and Honey malt and assertively friendly hop character.

The hop profile is quite distinct, featuring 100% Yakima Chinook hops in the kettle for bittering, flavor and aroma. In fact, this is the hoppiest beer yet from the Mighty Fish Brewers, and perhaps the hoppiest Winter seasonal you’ll have the pleasure to taste this year.

Only $8.99 Club Members $8.09 Order here.

Avery Brewing Old Jubilation: 6 pack

Old Jubilation winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee.
No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 2 years.

Anderson Valley Winter Solstice: 6 pack

Each year, when people are starting to unpack their winter clothes and replenish their firewood, a tiny brewery in the coastal redwoods of Northern California makes seasonal preparations of a different kind. As the cold arrives, they release a unique beverage created to add warmth to even the coldest and darkest of winter’s days. Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale begins with a very high original gravity to create a hearty and spicy brew with a deep amber hue and a smooth finish. Anderson Valley Brewing Company wishes you the very best for the holiday season and the New Year!

*****And Now The Singles…*******

Make your own gift pack with our wide variety of winter ales!

First up is Port Brewings Santa’s Little Helper 22oz

Known by some as “Santa’s Little Hangover” this beer is as black as coal!

Taste: Flavors of Dutch cocoa with roast coffee beans followed by sweet additions of chewy molasses cookies and caramel. Modest fruitiness in the background. That hard roastiness carries onward. Leafy hops, moderately bitter joining in with the continued malty character. Alcohol is certainly noted but it’s still fairly well-integrated. Medium-full body and lightly carbonated finishing with a smooth mouthfeel.

Next is from Hopworks Urban Brewery (aka, HUB)

Only $7.99 Club member: $7.19. Order here.

Abominable Organic Winter Ale 22oz

Made with Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe hops and six organic malts. A mixed bag of hoppiness with a hint of spice and malt. Opens up on the palate with grapefruit zest mingled with floral notes. Turning on the finish with plenty of spice showing the roasted malt backbone as well. More than a sipper this beer is welcome to all the snow shoveling after parties!

Only $5.49 Club members $4.94 Order here.

Ninkasi Sleighr (dark double alt beer) 22oz

Yes, I spelled Sleighr as Ninkasi would have me. This winter warmer turns up the heat! A delicious Northwest seasonal brewed with Winter in mind. A dark double alt, malty, nourishing and delicious, it’s sure to keep the cold weather at bay. Let Sleigh’r rock your winter!

Resembles rootbeer in the glass. However, the aromas of chocolate chip cookies, dried fruit and toasty malt tips you off that nope…it’s not rootbeer. It’s better! The malt body is rich and clean, and there are nicely insistent hops. They’re not showy or funky, just assertive, as you’d hope for in an alt. Straightforward and true to it’s name. A perfect alt for the season!

Only $3.99 Club Members $3.59 Order here.

Elysian Brewery Bifrost Winter Ale: 22oz

Pours golden with orange highlights. Smells alluringly sweet like caramel apples with a little spice and orange zest. Taste is bold and balanced with a good amount of citrus and earthy hop bitters to offset the malt character. Finishes dry with a bit of fruit

Only $4.49 Club Member $4.04 Order here.

Samuel Smith Winter Welcome: 18.7 oz

Throughout history, beer of somewhat higher alcohol and richness has been enjoyed for the winter holidays, when old friends get together to enjoy the season. Wassail, a festival to celebrate winter and the beer that goes with it, predates the Christian era. Winter Welcome is vintage-dated with a special label each year, and was first shipped to the US in 1990 – it was the first imported winter seasonal beer. Serve in a traditional Sam Smith tulip or nonik glass for the holidays.

Taste:

Honey-amber colored, creamy head of small bubbles, floral aroma and delicious malt flavor with great finesse.

We just did a mini-vertical tasting with this year’s Winter Welcome and last years that we had saved. This years expresses more hops, last years more malt. Sarah liked the crisp bite of the new beer, while Russell preferred the complexity of the 1 year aged Winter Welcome. Start your own vertical program, get a case and see how it develops!

Did you see the Samuel Smith Sammich?

Only $4.49 Club member $ 4.04 Order here.

*Some of these seasonals are very good if you cellar them for a year or 2. Start your own cellaring program, or ask about some of our already-aged product.
