Leonetti MerlotDear Enotecans,

It’s Leonetti time!  In the north west we mark the passage of time by Leonetti releases, and March 1st is the release date.  We’ve put together a fantastic tasting event to showcase the entire lineup, and then some.

Leonetti, the fabled Washington State winery typically on the top of anyone’s wish list.  We’re here to help your wishes come true.

Leonetti Wine Tasting Coming Up – March 29th!

We’ve scheduled a Leonetti Cellar wine tasting for March 29th at 7 pm. The plan is to open up all 4 wines produced by Leonetti this year, and pour generous 2 oz. helpings of each for $55 per person. We’re going the extra mile this year by also opening up Figgins Red and Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon, both of which are also made by Chris Figgins, for tasting.

Gary Figgins’ first exposure to the world of wine came as a child when his maternal grandparents – immigrants from Italy who settled in the Walla Walla Valley – served him small portions of diluted wine produced by hand in their dirt floored cellar. Frank and Rose Leonetti never conceived that years after their deaths these first tastes of wine would inspire the birth of a winery that would place their name on bottles of world-class wines: Leonetti Cellar.

Red Wine

Leonetti Cellars Reserve Blend 2009
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

Impenetrably dark magenta. A beautiful and precise nose of graham cracker, mixed high-tone florals, ripe fruit, and hints of honey. Palate is silky smooth, incredibly dense and plush, loaded with ripe fruit and butressed by fine grained tannin and a very long finish. Simply pleasurable to sit on the palate. Overall this wine is more youthfully restrained than the Cabernet with laser focus and purity. I think this wine will really blossom over the next five years and reward as much cellaring as its owner is willing to allow.

Cabernet Sauvignon 92%, Merlot 8%

Red Wine

Leonetti Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

Dark as night. An absolutely explosive nose of ripe red and black fruits, licorice, coffee, cassis and pine boughs. Palate is gorgeously plush, rich, dense, long, and loaded with fruit. Tannin is smooth and ripe, finish lasts forever. A very flamboyant yet balanced Cabernet.

Cabernet Sauvignon 88%, Merlot 7%, Carmenere 4%, Malbec 1%

Red Wine

Leonetti Cellars Merlot 2009
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

Beautiful dark color. The warm 2009 vintage produced a very fine and generous Merlot. It is already drinking gorgeously. The wine has a stunning bouquet of berries, fresh blooming flowers, cedar shavings, and mocha. On the palate, it is incredibly long, lush, and soft, with pure fruit and melted caramel. This is a truly hedonistic Merlot and a fine example of why I love making this varietal.

Merlot 78%, Cabernet Sauvignon 13%, Malbec 5%, Cabernet Franc 3%

Red Wine

Leonetti Cellars Sangiovese 2009
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

Exceptional deep ruby color. Enticing nose of dried fruits, cranberries, vanilla, pencil shavings and graham cracker. On the palate it is smooth, long and balanced by fine tannin and lively acidity. Excellent purity of fruit. After 3 days open this one is singing!

Sangiovese 92%, Syrah 8%

Red Wine

Figgins Red Blend 2008
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

This vintage will long be remembered as producing wines of exceptional finesse and quality. The inaugural release of FIGGINS perfectly exemplifies the brilliance of this vintage from the Walla Walla Valley. The wine has loads of bright raspberry, blueberry, red apple cider, Grand Marnier, tobacco and sage with further notes of cassis, red fruits, blackberries, currants, fruit tree flowers and a slight hint of cedar shavings. On the palate the wine has a remarkable freshness and excellent length highlighted by super fine-grained, silky tannins. Having a core of precise “just ripe fruit” the wine has power but emphasizes restraint, elegance and balance.

Red Wine

Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
(Walla Walla Valley, Washington)

Drew Bledsoe’s tasting notes:

As with our previous vintages, the 2009 shows a beautiful deep ruby color in the glass. The nose evolves dramatically after a couple of hours. Initially there are notes of dried fruits, strawberries and a hint of saddle leather. After about 90 minutes the aromas evolve and begin to show some high toned floral notes and red fruits. The juice is round and soft on the attack with nicely integrated tannins even in its youth. The ripe red fruit is balanced nicely by crisp acidity. With the deft touch of a true master, Chris Figgins captured the essence of this fantastic vintage in the 2009 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon. Please open at least a couple of hours before enjoying to allow this wine to show its true character.

Chris Figgins’ tasting notes:

Deep, beautiful ruby color. The nose opens to a bouquet of intense floral aromatics, red and black fruits, cassis, cinnamon, and chocolate, all of which reflect the generous warmth of the 2009 growing season. On the palate, the wine is soft, rich, driven with ripe fruit and incredibly silky tannins. There is a lovely thread of acidity that runs through this wine that elevates all the other generous components, which will bring a lot of pleasure the next 10+ years!
