Pumpkin Beer Patch

Dear Enotecans,

This is an update on the Pumpkin Beer situation.  We sent out an email a few weeks ago, but many of the Pumpkins that were expected at that point didn’t arrive, or sold out quickly.  Now we finally have most of them in and ready to go, so we wanted to let you know!  For instance, Southern Tier Pumking was sold out, but now is back and ready for you.  Also, you have to read Sarah’s write-up on the Two Beers Pumpkin Spice.  Seriously.

Just a quick note before we get into the Pumpkins.  Hannah will be serving drinks from 4pm – close tonight, (whenever the party stops, 9 or 10 or so if you’re here), so come on down to meet her and taste something delicious!  Great beer on tap, and a fantastic wine list in addition to specialty cocktails.

It’s Pumpkin Beer season! We have tons of them in stock! The beeradvocate.com Pumpkin Ale page has the best overall description:

Often released as a fall seasonal, Pumpkin Ales are quite varied. Some brewers opt to add hand-cut pumpkins and drop them in the mash, while others use puree or pumpkin flavoring. These beers also tend to be spiced with pumpkin pie spices, like: ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. Pumpkin Ales are typically mild, with little to no bitterness, a malty backbone, with some spice often taking the lead. Many will contain a starchy, slightly thick-ish, mouthfeel too. In our opinion, best versions use real pumpkin, while roasting the pumpkin can also add tremendous depth of character for even better results, though both methods are time-consuming and tend to drive brewmasters insane.

Here’s what we have available, these are ALL in stock right now.  If they’re all sold out, I just deleted them from the list.

Place an order for what you’d like and we’ll do our best to get what you want.

If you’re not sure what to try, let me recommend the Dogfish Head Punkin’ get a four pack and see what a good quality Pumpkin beer is about. Maybe it will be your thing!

New Pumpkin Beers This Year

BeerPike Harlots Harvest Pumpkin Ale 22oz – FINALLY HERE!

It’s big bold and voluptuous! Pike Harlot’s Harvest reminds us that Pike Brewing was  founded in a former brothel. Nellie’s girls who worked at The LaSalle Hotel were sometimes called harlots, though their best customers often affectionately called them “pumpkin”.

Pike head brewer, Dean Mochizuki, created this extraordinary beer using a complex blend of rich and flavorful malts that include: organic pils, organic pale, special b, Vienna, organic caramel, and crystal. To take full advantage of the bounty of the season, Harlot’s Harvest is brewed with the finest Yakima Valley hops, including Nugget for both bitterness and aroma, and Mt. Hood for aroma; and organic pumpkin puree from Stahlbush Island Farms, Corvalis, Oregon and organic brown sugar. It is sensuously seasoned with cassia bark, allspice, vanilla bean, nutmeg, ginger and clove.

8.5% ABV

BeerTwo Beers Pumpkin Spice 22oz

One of our fall seasonal beers, brewed in true small batch tradition. This beer is brewed with pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, allspice and cinnamon.  5.2% ABV

Sarah took home a bottle last night, and this is what she says:

The season is making a gentile shift from late summer to early fall. This means the stores have already had their Halloween stuff out for a month and Thanksgiving and Christmas products are very soon to follow. The wine and beer industry is a little more on pace in my opinion releasing fall beverages now and Christmas ales and such during…Christmas time. So with that we have a flood of pumpkin beers at the store for you to choose from. I have tried Pumpking by Southern Tier, the rumor was that it was liquid pumpkin pie and the rumors were true! Sweet and spicy it is! In my humble opinion Pumpking isn’t something you can have a vast amount of, it’s a pretty heavy beer. I guess you could describe the perfect pumpkin beer as not too sweet, just enough spice, robust but not so heavy I can’t have a second or third serving and by the end of the evening I don’t want to be so “pumpkined out” that by Thanksgiving I’m doing my own impression of Gallagher and the sledge-o-matic and using pumpkins instead of watermelons, because the sight of the orange squash gets me crazy. Whew, anyway that brings me to a pumpkin beer that meets my demands. It just came in this week and since it was new and it was beer…I had to try it. Two Beers has made “Pumpkin Spice Ale”. They describe it as “Orange in hue with aromas of fall, we brew this beer with pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, allspice and cinnamon. Cheers.” I’m thinking this might be similar to the liquid pie I tried before, and when I pour it in the glass it has a very rich amber orange hue and an intoxicating aroma of spice. When I take a sip I am pleasantly surprised.  I taste a slight fresh pumpkin note, followed by the spices mentioned in the brewers list, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove etc. The texture is balanced not being too heavy or light giving way to a crisp finish. I enjoyed a few glasses and did NOT slip into a pumpkin coma. I imagine this is the beer the hobbits drink. Why? I don’t know, but it makes me want to sing about the Green Dragon. This is a great Fall beer because it isn’t too heavy, nor to light and the spice is just right. Come on by and taste for yourself! Cheers!

The brewers used 100% pure Madagascar vanilla bean in the end of the boil and post-fermentation. The golden delicious pumpkin puree used for this years’ production creates a full-bodied mouth feel and more pronounced pumpkin characteristics. On first sip, the pumpkin, vanilla and chocolate converge on the palate with a pleasing bitterness and hints of delicate spices, including cinnamon and cloves. Reminiscent of freshly baked gingerbread, the beer lingers on the tongue, much like the white lacing on the glass, to create a full tasting experience.

BeerSouthern Tier Pumking 22oz

Pumking is an ode to Púca, a creature of Celtic folklore, who is both feared and respected by those who believe in it. Púca is said to waylay travelers throughout the night, tossing them on its back, and providing them the ride of their lives, from which they return forever changed! Brewed in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, a time of year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent. Pour Pumking into a goblet and allow it’s alluring spirit to overflow. As spicy aromas present themselves, let its deep copper color entrance you as your journey into this mystical brew has just begun. As the first drops touch your tongue a magical spell will bewitch your taste buds making it difficult to escape. This beer is brewed with pagan spirit yet should be enjoyed responsibly.
