(Estramadura, Portugal)

Portuga is made by Casa Santos Lima, a brilliant estate situated around 45km north of Lisbon. They make modern wines but without losing their Portuguese roots. They grow more than 50 different varieties in total, including a wide range of indigenous grapes but also a number of international varieties.

This red blend red combines the local Castelao (think peppery spice and wild herbs) and Touriga Franca (gorgeous aromatics and plum fruits) with the better known Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It’s a match made in heaven.

Official Tasting notes: Dark ruby colour. Intense aromas of black and red fruits with a hint of cinnamon from balanced oak ageing. Smooth, fresh and fruity; you get loads of juicy, ripe raspberry and plum fruits but with delicate floral notes, savoury spice and just a hint of vanilla. Perfect for the barbecue season.

40% Castelão, 30% Touriga Franca, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah

50_sarahSarah: Lush ripe cherry and raspberry nose, which follows to the palate. Fruit forward with a hint of cinnamon spice and cola nut. Balanced tannin, acidity and medium bodied.  Not a heavy red so very enjoyable for the warm months. An incredible deal for a great quality wine!

Portuga regularly retails for $9, which is a pretty snazzy deal.  However, right now we can offer Portuga for:

perrin-syrah-viognier-label-onlyExcellent French Wine Value, was $16 now $7.99

red-wineNicolas Perrin Rhone Syrah Viognier
(Northern Rhone Valley, France)

This French blend comes from a team comprised of two members of well-known vintner families. It combines Syrah which provides a fruity, herbal base flavor and Viognier, which balances the blend by offering a floral softness.

I think this wine, typical of France, deserves to be aerated or decanted.  Once it has time to open up, it shows off more of it’s savory flavors.  Perfect with all sorts of food, like grilled chicken, pasta, steak, and pork.  Get it for a summer red on the patio, priced right to share with everyone!

Check out this video of Nicolas Jaboulet speaking about this bottle of wine.

Originally offered at $16 per bottle now it’s 1/2 price or even better for Club Members.

My current favorite – a big Washington Blend called Something Red

Red WinePeriple Something Red
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

Say: PEH REE PLAH – French for journey.periple-logo

This fruit forward, mouth coating blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Syrah, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon is sure to provide a great night of casual conversation whether with backyard BBQ fare or at family pasta night.

We love this wine!  It’s our new “cryptic” if you know what I mean.  This stuff is delicious!  Wine maker Angie Shaltry lives and makes wine in Eagle, Idaho, and she sources fruit from all over the place.  This bottle is all from Washington State fruit, with more than one appellation included.  Angie apprenticed to Helen Turley the superstar wine maker from California.  We’re proud to have Angie here in Idaho and proud to share this amazing bottle of wine with you.  The label is fantastic too, unfortunately I don’t have a picture to share, so come in and see it for yourself!  Instead I included a picture of the wine maker.

50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Syrah, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon

More background on Something Red

periple-angieEver in the mood for wine, and you’re thinking “I’d like something red…”?  Well, we found it, “Something Red” by Periple.

We’re always searching for great wine bargains and when we tasted this one we literally bought it all so we could share it with you.

First, for context you will want to know about the wine maker.  Her name is Angie Shaltry, and she is a professional wine maker who decided she’d rather live in Idaho than California.  Many Idahoans and Spokanites can relate.

Second, she apprenticed to Helen Turley, who is easily one of the top wine makers world wide of all time.  She has some skills.

Third, she sources her grapes from the best vineyards in Washington and California.  Good fruit = good wine.

This wine is a very special bargain.  All of Angie’s other Periple (Say: PEH REE PLAH – French for journey) wines are about twice the price of this one.  They’re delicious, but this is just as delicious for 1/2 the price.

What’s the story behind Something Red?  Angie made only 25 cases of this wine, and didn’t really have a plan for it.  We tasted it and loved it so we bought all 25 cases.  It reminds us of wines like the Cryptic that are just truly fantastic, wine that nearly everyone will love.  We don’t want to run out.

Something Red is on the new Wine by the Glass List as well, so come on in for a glass at Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge.
