Italian SALE Wine Tasting this weekend
This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be sharing some Italian wines that are on sale! We’ll be tasting these wines Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to beat the rush!
We want to give you the opportunity to “try before you buy” so we offer a flight of wine for a low cost. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 5 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up with a glass.
(Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy)
Mont’Albano, an organic winery for over ten years, is enthusiastically headed by winemaker Mauro Bridot, a great supporter of the organic wine movement. The operation is located in the Friuli-Grave DOC in Italy’s northeast, not far from Venice, where it straddles the northern part of the Adriatic sea and stretches around to Slovenia.
This pleasant Pinot Grigio is something of a stylistic chameleon, managing to be at once crisply refreshing and rich on the palate. Its richness takes the form of pretty tropical fruit aromas and flavors including pineapple and banana, while its zip comes from a hint of citrus squirt and stony minerality. Supporting notes of quince, baking spice, caramel and flowers complete the experience, making this a remarkably versatile white wine.
100% Pinot Grigio
Was $20, Sale: $15
(Valpolicella, Italy)
Located in Valgatara, right in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, the Luigi Righetti estate is truly family run. Since 1909, when Angelo Righetti first earned a reputation as an outstanding winemaker, the family has focused on producing quality wines of distinction. Righetti’s wines exhibit an exceptional balance between fruit, wood aging, acidity and alcohol. The result is a wine with good aging potential, but also drinks well today.
A field blend of 60% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 10% Molinara, the wines are fermented in stainless steel and then transferred to casks. It is within these casks that the magic of a good Valpolicella happens. The casks contain the leftover pomace (leftover grape skins and seeds) from the production of the Amarone. Allowing this contact adds immense complexity to the wines (some refer to Ripasso wines as baby Amarone).
Dark ruby in color, it smells of black cherry and a little raisin (hints of Amarone). Medium bodied and flavorful, chocolate, raspberry and plum show well with just enough oak. This absolutely has everything a good Valpolicella should have and more!!
Was $18, Sale: $12
(Montecucco, Italy)
In Europe this wine is known as Licurgo, but in America it is named after the winemakers wife!
This wine spent 24 months in barriques, 6-12 months in the bottle before release. The color can be described as very intense ruby red tending to garnet, and the bouquet is round vinous and distinctively elegant.
On the palate this wine is full, dry and warm, with occasional hints of wood, very elegant, and is the perfect accompaniment to red meats, roasts, game and mature cheeses.
In a blind wine tasting done by a commission of a leading Italian wine magazine in November 2003, Licurgo was selected as one of the 10 best Tuscan wines and was listed with names such as Ornellaia and Paleo. 100 cases were produced.
100% Sangiovese
Was: $34, Sale: $20
(Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy)
Grown at high altitiude in Chianti Classico (approximately 1500 feet above sea level), this Merlot from Podere Ciona is remarkably clear in style and tension, with stinging, bright red fruits, subtle smoky notes, and a firm-bodied lushness that befits exceptional Merlot. From young vines, the fruits are very fresh, and goes perfectly with red and white meats.
95% Merlot, 5% Alicante Bouschet
Try this 300 case production wine, a Merlot produced in Tuscany. Some of my favorite wines on the planet are SuperTuscans rooted in a backbone of Merlot, and this is a great example of that style for an affordable price. The Alicante is a red skinned and red fruit grape that squeezes out red juice. It adds a measure of body and richness to this wine.
Was $34, Sale: $20
(Fruili, Italy)
Slightly sweet, weighing in at 12 grams / liter of sugar, this beautiful tawny colored dessert wine expresses notes of hazelnut and citrus. It’s made from the Verduzzo grape, and it comes across much like a sweet madeira dessert wine or a light tawny port. It’s not overly heavy, and makes a good fun sipper with a little chilling.
100% Verduzzo
Was $50, Sale: $20
Remember the Orphan Shelf – 20% Off Yummy Wine & Beer
What is the Orphan Shelf? It’s our fun way of closing out wine & beer to make way for the new stuff.
It’s located right at the checkout counter, and we offer a 20% discount on these products to
our Wine & Beer of the Month Club Members.
Why are products orphaned? Well, basically they are forgotten. Selling great one week and yesterdays news the next. Forgotten greats that need a home. Junebe the label isn’t show stopping or it’s from an area people are not familiar with so it just sits quietly, patently waiting to be adopted. Open your heat and mind these are really great wines!
The orphan shelf has had some recent admittants. Several bottles of wine were discovered that have been waiting for a home, and some beer has even migrated to the orphan shelf. Club members receive a 20% discount whenever they adopt an orphan. Find it in your heart.
A wide range of very delicious bottles are currently up for adoption. Come peer into the glassed-over eyeballs of these little fellas and see if one of them doesn’t tug at your heart. Pleeeze sir, can I have some more?
