Growlers! Customer Story of the Week…

Posted by John Eckhart Posted on Feb - 27 - 2013

Dear Enotecans,

This email is about Craft Beer that can be had in beautiful 1/2 gallon refillable growlers.  Because of the refillable nature of growlers, they’re environmentally friendly.  Most growler fills are economical as well, yielding great cost per oz. savings over bottled beer.

Grab your growler, or buy one from Enoteca.  We included info on stainless steel and amber glass growlers for sale below in this message.  While your growler is being filled, order a pint of something delicious on tap and sit for a while.  If you are part of the Wine & Beer of the Month Club Subscription, you get 10% off your growler fill.

Got a growler?  Want to fill it?

We hear from a lot of people who are surprised to find they can get some delicious craft beer in a growler right here in Post Falls.  We recommend signing up for Keg Tap Text Messages to be notified when we tap a new keg.  This is a perfect opportunity to come down and fill up your growler!  You can always see What’s On Tap on our website.  Hint: Right now there are 4 IPAs, 3 Stouts, 2 Barleywines, 2 Fresh Hops, 3 Bourbon Barrel Aged beers and 1 chocolate beer on tap.  The lowest ABV is 5% the highest is 16%. That adds up to 14 and we only have 11 handles.  See What’s On Tap to figure out how that is possible!

Woman Drinking BeerEnoteca Customer Story of the Week

The staff at Enoteca are keeping our eyes and ears open each week for a story to share about our exceptional customers.  We meet so many great people and want to share with you how excellent it is to be here, and when we feature someone, it comes with a reward: a drink on us.

Last Saturday was a busy day at Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge.  Two groups came in that were in the running for our customer story of the week.  The first group was on a Beer Tour visiting north Idaho beer destinations like Enoteca, Selkirk Abbey, Trickster, and Bi-Plane.   Another group came in from Missoula.

Richard D and his group from Missoula are our customer story of the week.  6 people came to Post Falls and booked a room at Templins for the sole purpose of visiting Enoteca.  Richard joined the Fine Beer Club and he and his group enjoyed Beer Flights at the bar and picking through our rare and awesome beer selection of over 800 different craft beers to take back to Montana.

Customer of the Week: Richard, thanks for your commitment and enthusiasm for craft beer, come on over for a free pint on us next time you’re in Idaho.
Congratulations: Winner of the Gold and Garnet earrings, Debbie Wilson!  Congrats Debbie, and thanks for trying great New Amsterdam drinks and attending the Valentine’s Mixology Monday!

Beer Tasting Events and Reminders

Growler Fill Economy

What’s the big deal about growler fills anyway?  Let’s talk about some of the advantages.

First, there are some beers that are only available on tap.  For instance, right now the Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Aged Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout (whew!) doesn’t come in bottles, so the only way to take some home for your enjoyment or your party is to fill a growler.  Also Riverport Alpha Reign Wet Hop IPA and Sam Adams Old Kentucky Bourbon Ale.

Second, beer often tastes better from draft.  Because of it’s transport in larger containers and continual pressure systems, many beers have a noticeable flavor improvement on tap.  We recommend and sell growlers that are Amber glass or Stainless Steel (see this message below for more info) which keeps UV light out of your beer, and we have Poly caps which maintain an incredible seal.  Once you uncap it, you want to drink it that night, but you can store it with a Poly cap for quite a while without any degradation.

Third, on many beers, the cost per oz. on tap is significantly better by the growler fill.  Right now Deschutes Hop Henge, Rogue Double Chocolate, and Beer Valley Black Flag are great examples of delicious beers that are better bang for your buck in the Growler.

Fourth, if you are part of the Wine & Beer of the Month Club Subscription, you get 10% off your growler fill, making it an even better deal.

Growler Fill Questions

Hops HandWhere Can I Fill My Growler?

Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge, at 112 E. Seltice Way in Post Falls, next to the White House Grill, has 11 beers on tap, rotating craft beers constantly, and does growler fills!  We recommend getting Keg Tap Text Messages to learn when new beers are tapped.  Our local breweries are also filling growlers of their own beer, like Selkirk Abbey, Trickster, Laughing Dog and Bi-Plane Brewing.  The main difference is that we’re bringing in beer from all over to fill growlers.

When Can I Fill My Growler?

Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge is open with a fully dedicated bar tender from 4pm – last customer Monday-Friday, and 12-last customer Saturday.  We can fill growler’s any time we’re open though, from 11-last customer Monday-Saturday.  Stay and have a pint while we’re filling it for you.

How long will the growler last?

This is a question with two answers.

First, like any other beer, once you open it, break the seal, the fizz starts to fade and you have a time limit for finishing the growler.  On occasion I have failed to finish a growler in one night, and capped it for the next day, and that generally works out OK, however, optimally, once you open it, drink it!

Second, the sealed growler can last quite a while if it hasn’t been opened.  If you’re using Enoteca Amber growlers with Poly seal caps, or the Stainless Klean Kanteen Growlers, we have personally tested it for 3 days, 3 weeks, and even 3 months, with great results.  Plenty of carbonation and great flavor once it’s opened.  Different beers may not be intended to last that long in the bottle, like IPAs, but the growler itself can take care of the beer for a while.  Your own growler may be a different story, and we have definitely seen beers go flat in growlers with metal caps much faster.

Grand Teton Stainless Steel Growler

Grand Teton Klean Kanteen GrowlerEver heard of a stainless steel growler? Come check out the latest and greatest modern growler in stock now at Enoteca. A great gift idea for the beer aficionado, or get one and fill it up to enjoy tonight!

Here’s what I like about it. Think about the lakes and rivers, where you’re not allowed to have glass. I like to float the north fork, and fish the St. Joe with Jake, and this will come in mighty handy this summer. One Beer Club Member suggested tying it up to your bicycle. Whatever creative ways you think of to use it, the concept of a stainless steel beer growler is fantastic.

These bad-boys come to us from the great Grand Teton Brewing Company, Idaho’s southern gem in the brewing business. It looks smaller than a glass growler, so of course I had to measure out 64 oz. and test it. Turns out it fills up the full 64 oz, just under the shoulder. Yes, scientifically proven to hold a 1/2 gallon of beer!

Some official words from the manufacturer.

Klean Kanteen has come up with an ingenious new way to tote around your half gallon (growler fill) of delicious brew!

The 64oz wide-mouth bottle is made from high quality, 18/8, food-grade stainless steel that’s totally free of BPA and other toxins. Because stainless steel itself is safe, they don’t need to coat the inside of the bottle with a plastic or epoxy lining, which is one of the main differences between a stainless steel Klean Kanteen and aluminum bottles.

Food-grade stainless steel is used in the brewing, food and winemaking industries too. It’s the material of choice because it doesn’t retain or impart flavors. No matter how many times you refill it, no matter what you put into it, your Klean Kanteen Wide will keep your drinks fresh, crisp and clean tasting. The extra wide opening is more than 2 inches in diameter for quick filling, pouring and cleaning, and the universal thread design fits with standard backcountry water filters. (Just in case you run out of beer, and need to use it for water?)

The Kanteens caps are 100% stainless steel on the inside, so your drinks never touch plastic. In fact, the only plastic on the Klean Kanteen Wide is on the outside of the cap; and of course it’s also BPA-free polypropylene.
