Deschutes Black Butte Anniversary XXV

This year, Deschutes Brewery is toasting 25 years with the 6th vintage of its imperial porter, Black Butte XXV. In order to celebrate in style, this iteration of the annual beer amps it up with the addition of Theo’s cocoa nibs, Mission figs and Medjool dates. The bourbon barrel aged portion of the beer was increased by 20 percent over past versions of this anniversary brew, and drinkers of Black Butte XXV will notice complex notes of vanilla, tart and dried fruit, and chocolate. With everything that’s going on in the flavor profile of this beer, you may have to raise several toasts just to experience it all.

“Twenty-five years in business is a significant milestone for us, and our team wanted to create an anniversary brew that truly marked the occasion,” said Cam O’Connor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. “Not only did we increase the aging amount in barrels for this beer, but we soured a small portion of the final blend. We added a bunch of new ingredients, including black currants. I think fans will find that there are many layers of delicious complexity in this year’s version.”

full-sail-bourbon-imperial-stoutFull Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 2013

While we’re talking about Deschutes’ big bad bourbon barrel aged beer, it’s a good time to talk about some other stock we have presently, namely the Full Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout.

This beer comes from the small brew house at Riverplace, and has a distinction of being 100% Kentucky bourbon barrel aged.  Just any Bourbon?  No, Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, and Jim Beam casks.  To my taste buds, this bottle of beer blows the lid off some of the other famous big barrel aged beers.  The big 100% barrel aging program is somewhat unique, and produces a unique flavor profile, as it certainly brings the bourbon to the fore front.  As a young beer, one might consider it dis-jointed, but that’s exactly what cellaring is for, to harmonize the flavors.

From the Full Sail press release:

According to Full Sail Brewmaster Jamie Emmerson, this beer was brewed in December of 2011 and has since aged in Kentucky Bourbon casks from Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, Jim Beam. This extended aging presents hints of vanilla and allows the Stout to pick up the flavors of the wood, bourbon and oak. The aging combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for an extraordinary and wonderful taste experience. It has a strong roasted malt character and a full body. Chocolate and caramel nuances blend with the hops for a smooth Imperial Stout. It cellars well.

ABV 9.6% IBUs: 40 (Formerly known as Black Gold)

Wood barrel aging is an art form. When done right, it’s a wonderful thing. Our barrel aged beers became a Full Sail tradition when we joyfully discovered what happens when you pair vintage barrels, dedication, and patience. We rack this special beer in small batches, available in only very limited quantities. It cellars well, so if you store a few bottles in a dark, cool place and be patient, you will be rewarded for your effort and restraint.
