Sinclair Vixen

Red WineSinclair Estate Vineyards Vixen Red Blend 2008
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

On the nose I pick up a lot of succulent perfumey scents, reminiscent of wild flowers in the cedar forest. We took a walk in the Settler’s Grove this weekend and the cedar aroma is fresh in my mind, and this bottle of wine brings it out. Another familiar scent from this weekend are whispers of smokey notes. With all the neighborhood BBQ’s fired up, I guess I was in the moment!

This wine starts out quite forceful, with a pretty big 14.1% ABV. I recommend giving it some time to open up, decant it for an hour or put it through a Vinturi to allow the more subtle and approachable flavors to come forth. Patience is rewarded with this wine.

Subtle pepper and a more intense dark cherry show first with more lush and subtle marionberry and spice on the mid and back palate. Oh my gosh this is scrumptious!

More fruit comes to the forefront as this wine is allowed to open up. I kept sampling it over about an hour before writing this, and the wine continued to develop over the next few hours until the bottle went dry. This is easily a “two bottles” sort of wine because it’s complexity just keeps enticing you to seek out more of its depths.  Let her speak to you, she’s a Vixen with something to say!

The mouth feel is rich and lush but not velvety. The firm acidity is present in a great way to wash out the palate with the greasy yummy BBQ foods that it’s time to start grilling. We grilled some chicken with a Sandpoint made BBQ sauce, grilled up some corn and made some home-made yam fries, and this Vixen surely stole the show in this crowd.  You can pair this with all sorts of foods, but it has enough fruit to go as a stand-alone cocktail wine.

The dark fruit flavors and robust tannins play very well with the charred meats and bold sauce flavors.  Aptly named the Vixen, this is a wonderful addition to any summer night!

Did I mention that stocking up is made much easier with a special price? This price is only available until the supplies of this vintage are depleted, so don’t hesitate to stock up! The Vixen was released at about $50 per bottle, but we’re thrilled to be able to offer it under $20 for Club members, and close to that for non-members.

Here are the notes from the wine maker:

This distinctive Rhone style blend is complex, intriguing. and layered throughout. Aromas of coffee and caramel dipped raspberries transition into orange peel and nutmeg. The texture is silky smooth and finishes with a subtle elusiveness of clove and white pepper.
