September Wine & Beer Club is in!

The wine and beer for this month’s club has arrived and will be in your bin on Friday, September 5th! If you’re not a Club Member yet, learn about the Wine & Beer Club?

Wine & Beer Club is rolling out this Friday, and tasting is from 4-7 Friday. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines), $5 per glass (5 oz. of one wine), and $10 for the Anniversary Club Red, glass pour only.

The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine André Brunel Domaine de L’Enclos Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2004
(Rhône Valley, France)

André Brunel, the renowned producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape of Les Cailloux, vinifies for us this fantastic Côtes du Rhône. The L’Enclos Rouge is produced from fruit grown on the rocky slopes on the Eastern bank of the Rhône River, near the famous towns of Lirac and Tavel. This southern Rhône red has lots of sweet cherry fruit and is very lush on the palate. A dollop of Syrah adds texture and hints of black pepper spices.

80% Grenache, 20% Syrah

White Wine RiverAerie Pinot Gris 2006
(Evergreen Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Washington)

Vanilla bean, peach skins, honeysuckle and lemon zest aromas; crisp on the palate, with a slightly tart lemon zest flavor, fleshy in the mid-palate with a lingering mineral quality.

Ron Brunell, wine maker and more for Bunnell Family Cellars, is a class act. He shared this wine with us some months ago and we’ve finally found a spot for it in our Wine Club. It’s from the Wahluke slope Evergreen Vineyard site, which is home to some excellent cool-weather white wines. Ron’s relationship with the Milbrandt family makes this wine possible.

100% Pinot Gris

Reserve Club

Red Wine Charles Smith ‘Chateau Smith’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

Charles Smith, former band manager to Sammy Haggar, is one of a kind. His tripped-out hairdo nearly matches his tripped-out wine making style. Chateau Smith is one of those rare wines that demands to be “Clubbed.” We’re not talking about baby seals, we’re talking “Wine Club Selection.” The fact is we planned on a different wine in this spot for September, but when the local supplier said they had just enough bottles to fill our Reserve Red spot, and we had partaken of this chewey mouthful of ostentatious goodness, we bought it all to share with our Reserve Red friends. Beware the screwcap, it makes this wine far too easy to get into.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

White Wine Pacific Rim Wallula Vineyard Riesling 2007
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

15,000 years ago, the Missoula Floods ripped across the Pacific Northwest. Colossal walls of water carved the landscape with ten times the strength of all the world’s rivers. Volcanoes erupted with lava and ash. The soils of the Columbia Valley were born. Pacific Rim Rieslings draw complexity from layers of soil born of earth, air, fire and water. And the vineyards selected for very limited production Single Vineyard wines represent the absolute best of the best of Columbia Valley soils.

With the Riesling grapes from Wallula Vineyard, they’ve crafted a beautifully structured and crisp wine with bright acidity and perfect balance. The resulting wine shows some apricot and pineapple. It is very fresh and lively, tasting dry. The wine has great acidity with some apple fruit and nutmeg notes (probably from the lees contact fraction).

This is a great wine for clean, local, fresh food like grilled seafood or spring salads.

100% Riesling

Premier Club

Red Wine J. Bookwalter Merlot 2005
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

Continuing their long tradition of Merlot’s aged exclusively in small French oak barrels and blended with small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot, Bookwalter’s 2005 Merlot displays the signature chocolate, espresso, bright cherry and clove aromatics that define their wines. The wine enters the palate with sweet plum and cherry flavors and transitions seamlessly into a mid-palate that is broad and viscous. The wine finishes with hints of vanilla and allspice followed by ripe, sweet tannins that linger for nearly one full minute.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast

John Bookwalter, the junior, visited Enoteca and showed off his wines. Wow. Give me another glass. The guy is a nut who has taken his literary last name far to seriously. He’s made wines such as Protagonist, Chapter Two, Foreshadow, Preface, etc. He seems to relish making “Library” wines. Premier Red wine club members will note that their bottle of “Bookwalter” is in their Bin where it belongs on the bookshelf.

90% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot

White Wine K Vintners Viognier 2007
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

Pears and orange blossom in the nose. This fantastic voignier is pure balance and mineral. It’s another winner, so winner winner chicken dinner.

Charles Smith, former band manager to Sammy Haggar, is one of a kind. His tripped-out hairdo nearly matches his tripped-out wine making style. This is a Viognier that sings.

100% Viognier

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Fidelitas Boushey Vineyard Red Blend 2005
(Yakima Valley, Washington)

Fidelitas is honored to collaborate with grower Dick Boushey to make a blended red wine from grapes twenty-five years in existence from Boushey’s Yakima Valley vineyard. Exceptional complexity of rich dark fruit, spice notes and a tremendous finish highlight this first ever wine for Fidelitas from Boushey Vineyard. Dick Boushey has been awarded “Grower of the year 2007” by Wine & Spirits magazine.

Fidelitas wine maker Charlie Hoppes is a rare vintage. When we met him at a recent trade tasting, he immediately took Judah and held him and played with him while we tasted the wine. All Charlie could talk about is family and home. He’s a genuine, down to earth guy who makes killer wine. Give this powerful blend a gander.

90 Points Wine Advocate

53% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc

Beer Club

Beer Club members receive 2 bottles and 2 cans of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase.

Fine Beer Avery Ale to the Chief 2008 (Boulder Colorado)
No matter who you’re voting for this season, raise a glass and toast!
Here’s the Declaration:
We the Brewers of Avery Brewing Company, in order to form a more perfect ale, require a new leadership that can liberate us from our quagmires in foreign lands; embrace environmentally sound energy alternatives to imported oil; heal our ailing health care system; free us from tyrannical debt and resurrect the collapsing dollar. We hereby pledge to provide him or her with an ample amount of our Presidential Pale Ale to support in the struggle for the aforementioned goals! Hail to the New Chief!

Not an “Imperial” pale ale, this is a democracy. It’s Presidential! Take the all-American pale ale, a bipartisan blend of malt and hops, increase to both Avery Brewing standards, and then, of course, dry hop the result with that most quintessential of American hops, Cascades, and you get this… Ale to the Chief. A brew worthy of the Oval Office! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

8.75% ABV, 22 oz. Bottle

Fine Beer Laughing Dog Dogzilla Black IPA (Ponderay, Idaho)
DogZilla is brewed with dark black malt, and it is dry hopped with Cascade and Simcoe hops. The result is a deceiving black color, and pure pine/citrus hop bliss dominates the taste. This twist on a normal IPA has a mild balancing sweetness, but don’t expect a heavy beer because of the color. The hops in this are sticky and resinous, and they don’t back down.

Unknown% ABV, 22 oz. Bottle

Fine Beer Oskar Blues Gordon (Lyons, Colorado)
Beer in a can? At Enoteca? In the Beer Club? How can this be? Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Here’s what the brewery folks say:
Gordon is a hybrid version of strong ale, somewhere between an Imperial Red and a Double IPA. It is made with six different malts and three types of hops, then dry-hopped with a mutha lode of Amarillo hops.

It features a gooey, resiny aroma and a luscious mouthfeel. Gordon is brewed with dash of chocolate malt in it, to round out its load of hops and balance the beer. The result is an assertive yet exceptionally smooth version of strong beer.

We brew Gordon in tribute to the late Gordon Knight. In addition to opening some of Colorado’s first microbreweries, Knight was a Vietnam vet, grade-A citizen, and huge promoter of craft beer. He lost his life in 2002 while fighting a wild fire outside of Lyons, Colorado.

8.7% ABV, 85 IBU’s, 12 oz. Can

Fine Beer Oskar Blues Gordon (Lyons, Colorado)
Another beer in a can? What’s this world coming to? 10.5% Imperial Stout, that’s what.

Here’s what the brewery folks say:
Ten FIDY Imperial Stout, Oskar Blues’ winter seasonal beer, is immensely viscous and loaded with neck-deep flavors of chocolate, malt, coffee, cocoa and oats.

It’s the beer equivalent of decadently rich milkshake made with malted-milk balls and Heaven’s best chocolate ice cream. Ten FIDY is about 10% ABV and is made with enormous amounts of two-row malts, chocolate malts, roasted barley, flaked oats and hops. Its huge-but-comforting flavors hide a whopping 98 IBUs that are deftly tucked underneath the beer’s mountains of malty goodness.

Ten FIDY is the ultimate Rocky Mountain winter warmer, and further proof of the creative muscle of our beloved brewing staff.

10.5% ABV, 98 IBU’s, 12 oz. Can
