Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge – Open Early Friday

Zach will be behind the bar on Friday, and he’s willing to open the bar early Friday.  We’ll start serving beverages at 1pm, which should be about right after shopping the early rush, getting some lunch, and being ready for a drink!

Besides our brand spankin’ new Wine Flight  and rockin’ Beer on Tap list, we’re serving a full cocktail list that is just delicious, and a cocktail special just for this weekend.

The Last Word – Russell’s favorite cocktail at the moment.  It took us a few months to source all the ingredients necessary to make this fantastic classic cocktail, and now that we’re ready I can’t get enough.  Delicious beyond all reason.

The Last Word is a Gin based prohibition-era cocktail originally developed at the Detroit Athletic Club. While the drink eventually fell out of favor, it has recently enjoyed a renewed popularity after being rediscovered as a cult hit in the Seattle area by Murray Stenson, while a bartender at the Zig Zag Café.

According to Ted Saucier the cocktail was created in the early 1920s in Detroit, where it was first served at the Detroit Athletic Club. Later Frank Fogarty introduced it to New York and in 1951 its recipe got published in Ted Saucier’s classic cocktail book Bottoms Up!.

The cocktail however fell into oblivion sometime after World War II until it was rediscovered by Murray Stenson in 2004. Stenson was looking for a new cocktail for the Zig Zag Cafe in Seattle, when he came across an old 1952 copy of Saucier’s book. Soon after being offered in the Zig Zag Cafe it became somewhat of cult hit in the Seattle and Portland areas and spread to cocktail bars in major cities worldwide

Wine Deals

Zonin Chianti – 1/2 price

(Chianti, Tuscany)

Russell says: Enjoyable sipper, goes down easy and perfect with food from the region. This is really a perfect wine for a steak, I prefer it to big California Cab with my steak, because this wine was designed from the ground up as a food wine, not as a cocktail wine. Look for it to be meaty, look for notes of cedar, olives, dried herbs, and dust. Of course it comes out the gate with fruit, but these other “earthier” flavors are what make Chianti great, and make it pair incredibly well with food, like a big steak, or spaghetti with meat balls. The bright acidity and light body make it a perfect way to prepare your mouth for the next bite, as it refreshes your steak-enjoying taste buds each time you take a sip.

Here’s what the Italians say about their wine:
Ruby-red with garnet reflections. Fine aromas, with scents of cherries, wild berry fruits, violets and spicy hints. Dry and fresh, with good body and agreeable tannins. It has a fruity and persistent taste with a lightly spicy background.

When young it is excellent with richly-flavored dishes, especially the traditional specialties of Tuscan cuisine. After the wine has aged 3 or 4 years, we recommend it with game and stewed meats.

90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo.

Thomas Halby Cabernet

Thomas Halby Napa Valley Cabernet 2010 – 1/2 price

(Napa Valley, California)

Varietal Blend: 93% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Napa Valley Malbec, 1% Napa Valley Petite Verdot, 1% Napa Valley Syrah

Aging: Barrel aged in a mix of French and American Oak barrels (40% new). Aging period of 17 months (average for the blend).

Tasting note: Starting with aromas of concentrated cassis, cherry, slight mint, some caramelized oak notes on the nose. Followed by ripe cherry flavors, good depth and concentration with some minerality in the mid-palate, lingering finish (with “bittersweet chocolate” tannins)

Pairing: Thomas Halby Cabernet Sauvignon is a well-balanced and intensely flavored wine. Enjoy it with hearty foods such as roasted or grilled red meats or duck.

Alessandra Bodda Monferrato Rosso – 1/2 Price

(Piedmonte, Italy)

From Kermit Lynch importers comes this unique and interesting Italian red! Kermit Lynch Cuvées, a series from which this is an example, offer a tremendous value. They’re collaborations between one of the legends of European imports and small family wine makers.

This delicious red is a collaboration with winemaker Alessandra Bodda from Tenuta La Pergola. Located in Piedmont, the wines of this estate are very traditional and typical of the region.

The sand and limestone vineyards of Monferrato produce light, earthy and easy to drink reds. This wine is no exception, providing dark cherry, licorice, and earthy nuances on the nose and the palate. This super silky wine is a truly fantastic value, a great wine for so many classic Italian dishes.

60% Barbera, 20% Croatina, and 20% Freisa

Lively ruby red in color. Fresh on the nose with notes of violets and red fruits. The pleasant and enjoyable palate boasts rounded tannins. Perfect for young drinking.

This Chianti Classico, a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, possesses the lively aromatics and rich fruit of its bigger brothers, but is designed for younger drinking. A prime example of the appellation.

You have to check out the label on this one, it’s great.

Liberty School Syrah – 1/2 off

(Central Coast, California)

First Aromas of cedar and cherry, followed by the promise of earthiness. Later, candied florals emerge. Deep plum red color with an undertone of brown bears out the promise: this is European-style in flavor and acidity, but New World in its apparent low tannins and mild finish.

The Liberty School Syrah displays up-front ripe, fruit aromas. Full flavors of plum, cola nut and exotic spice lead to a hint of tobacco with a soft, pleasing grip on the finish. The wine has a robust mineral backbone with well integrated, silky tannins that lend structure and balance.

Liberty School is a family-owned winery in Paso Robles, the heart of California’s Central Coast. This unique growing region is characterized by a diversity of vineyard soils, its proximity to the coast, and a climate of diurnal temperature shifts of up to 50 degrees. The Hope family planted wine grapes here in 1978. Since then, their history and reputation for quality in the region have helped to define and promote Paso Robles wines nationally. In the early 1980’s, Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles caught the attention of renowned Napa Valley vintner Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards. In search of Cabernet for his second label, Liberty School, Wagner approached Hope Farms as a fruit source.
