Dear Enotecans,

Come to Enoteca Drinkery & Refuge this Thursday, January 24th any time after 4pm for a unique and interesting drop in tasting featuring beer and bourbon.  Share this with your friends, this is a rare event for Post Falls and if you like craft beer and/or craft Bourbon, you won’t want to miss it.

Reminder: You can see upcoming educational tasting events like this on the left hand sidebar on our website here.  Visit now to see an upcoming Sierra Nevada beer tasting, featuring a release from the Brewers Dozen promotion.

Last fall at a trade show I made contact with a representative of Anderson Valley Brewing Company and found out that AVBC has formed an exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey for their used Bourbon Barrels.  That means that all of Anderson Valley’s bourbon barrel aged beers will be using Wild Turkey specific barrels, and Wild Turkey won’t be sending their barrels to any other brewery.

Sounds like a match made in heaven.

The first beer to be released under this partnership is the Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrels.   The original Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout was aged for three months in #4 allligator charred American Oak barrels previously used to make Wild Turkey.  This Thursday we’re tapping a keg of this beer, and to celebrate we’re hosting both Erin O’Riley from Anderon Valley and Bill Koder representing Wild Turkey.

How Does This Tasting Event Work?

From 4pm – late on Thursday, January 24th, Erin & Bill will be here to talk about the beer and bourbon.  This is not a ticketed event, this is a drop in event.  You can come by and check out Anderson Valley beers and Wild Turkey Bourbons, and of course the marriage of the two in the Wild Turkey Barney Flats.  Don’t miss this educational event!

We will have a menu featuring recommended parings of Beer & Bourbon that you can order from the Drinkery, and Bill will be sampling some of the Wild Turkey products.  We have all Anderson Valley beers available for pairing, and several levels of Wild Turkey, Russell’s Reserve, and Eagle Rare Bourbon’s planned for this event.  Come down to learn more about beer & bourbon, and pairing the two, and order some pairings from the menu to experience it yourself.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company is in Boontville, California which has it’s own language, called Boontling.  Learn more about it on Wikipedia, or come to this event to learn more from Erin.  You’ll notice Boontling phrases on many of the Anderson Valley Beers, and their slogan is from Boontling: Bahl Hornin since 1987.

From the Press Release for the partnership

As part of an exclusive partnership and licensing agreement, the Anderson Valley Brewing Company and the famed bourbon brand Wild Turkey® announced today that they will be teaming to facilitate the brewing of world-class Bourbon-barrel aged craft beers using repurposed American oak barrels from the Wild Turkey Distillery in Kentucky.

“I’ve been familiar with Anderson Valley Brewing for some time, and I’ve always admired the pride and care they take in crafting and brewing their beer,” said Jimmy Russell, Wild Turkey Master Distiller. “It’s similar to the approach we take with our bourbon, which made this partnership such a natural fit. Now I finally have a good excuse to drink a great craft beer!”

“The opportunity to partner with the Bourbon Hall of Fame Russell family and Wild Turkey is tremendously exciting,” said Trey White, Anderson Valley owner and CEO. “We have done some trial brews with a limited number of Wild Turkey barrels over the past several months and the beers to date have been awesome. We cannot wait to create some truly special craft beers with hundreds rather than a handful of barrels. The relationship with Wild Turkey provides Anderson Valley with a world class, consistent source of barrelage rather than randomly sourced barrelage in limited quantities. Anderson Valley, working with the Russell’s, will explore new frontiers in barrel aged craft beer.”

The initial production from this first-of-its-kind collaboration will be a Bourbon barrel aged Stout featuring Anderson Valley’s award-winning Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. Aged for three months, the resulting beer will be deep ebony in hue with a beautiful mahogany head, an aroma of fresh-baked bread, toffee, and espresso mingling with the woody vanilla notes of Bourbon whiskey and the rich roasted flavors wrapped with Bourbon.

“We chose to work with Wild Turkey not only because their whiskey is so outstanding – they are also the only major Bourbon producer to use a #4 “alligator” char on their barrels. This helps to introduce way more flavor to the Bourbon, and therefore way more flavor to our famous Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout,” continued White.
