June Wine & Beer Club is in!

The wine and beer for this month’s Club has arrived and will be in your Bin on Friday! If you’re not a Club Member yet, learn about the Wine & Beer Club?

Wine & Beer Club is rolling out this Friday, and tasting is from 4-7 Friday. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines – red or white).

The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine Deen de Bortoli Vat 1 Petite Sirah 2007
(South Eastern Australia)

The inspiration for the Vat Series came from the early days when Deen de Bortoli would personally chalk numbers on vats to mark them out. Vat is the term adopted by early Australian winemakers for the large vessels used to hold the maturing wine before it was ready for bottling.

This wine benefits from 12 months maturation in oak barriques and displays dark fruit characters and smooth firm tannins. It is a great alternative variety to serve with traditional meat dishes or hearty casseroles.

100% Petite Sirah

White Wine Justin Monmousseau Cheverny 2009
(Cheverny, France)

Situated between the Loire and the Sologne area, the castle of Cheverny shares its name with the appellation zone which surrounds it. Hergé, the author of the comic strip “Tintin”, used it as the setting to the colorful character of “Captain Haddock.” This cuvée comes from the Estate Maison located on a clayey-siliceous soil, slightly gravelly.

The robe of white Cheverny is of a brilliant pale gold with soft green tints. The complex and surprising bouquet gets close to lychees, flowers of acacia and ripe lemons with a light touch of black currant and licorice due to the Sauvignon Blanc grape.

In mouth, this very elegant wine concentrates its richness. Fresh, alive and fruity, it is fleshy with a nice and long final. Delicious and fresh as an aperitif, it is perfect to drink with fish and seafood. Try it with asparagus!

70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chardonnay

Reserve Club

Red Wine Timberrock Malbec 2007
(Phinney Hill Vineyard, Washington)

From local wine maker Kevin Rogers, Post Falls wine making super-star!

The wine is a dark star garnet color that opens with aromas of raspberry jam and caramelized sugar. On the palette it shows bright acid framing currants and blackberries with a hint of cedar. A weighty mouthfeel ushers in a lingering, generous finish. 60 cases produced. Winery is sold out.

White Wine Robert Hall Viognier 2007
(Paso Robles, California)

Featuring honeysuckle, orange blossom and sweet spice aromas, this Viognier shows flavors of apricot and white peach with a burst of tropical mango with a hint of tangerine. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied and refreshingly dry with balancing crisp acidity. Enjoy chilled by itself or with fresh fruits, cheeses and with spicy dishes.

100% Viognier

Premier Club

Red Wine de Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate Grown Shiraz Viognier 2006
(Yarra Valley, NSW, Australia)

De Bortoli Wines was established in 1928, four years after the founder, Vittorio De Bortoli and his wife Giuseppina migrated to Australia from Northern Italy.

Yarra Valley Estate Grown wines are sourced from their vineyards at Dixon’s Creek. The mature, low yielding vines deliver exceptional quality fruit to the winery which is preserved during winemaking with gentle, low intervention techniques to produce wine with varietal detail and purity.

Take a look at how the Viognier cofermentation brings out the color, it’s a vibrant purple! On the nose, the Viognier brings out the rich, lifted perfumed white pepper Shiraz fruit and adds subliminal complex floral Viognier hints. On the palate it expresses full fruit palate with berries, pepper and subtle appearance of oak. The small addition of Viognier has contributed complexity, whilst maintaining tightness and detail. Serve with roast rack of lamb or mature hard cheeses.

94 James Halliday, 90 Wine Enthusiast, 92 Tanzer

95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier

White Wine Domaine Serene Rockblock Del Rio Viognier 2007
(Del Rio Vineyard, Rogue Valley, Oregon)

The Rockblock label started in 1999 with a sole focus: vineyard designated Oregon Syrah & Viognier. They have focused on the warmer areas of Oregon in the south and east where these classic “Rhone-varietals”can achieve maximum expression of character and ripeness.

The name Rockblock was chosen to reinforce the concept that the most profound expressions of Syrah and Viognier are grown in areas where the soils are nutrient poor and often “rocky”. All of the vineyards we work with have these intense and distinctive characteristics.

Vibrant aromas of white flowers, fresh apricot, honeydew melon and pear liquer. The mouth-filling palate is full and supple, showing minerality, hints of pear, kiwi, key lime, and white peach with an incredibly persistent finish.

Sourced entirely from Del Rio Vineyard in the Rogue Valley appellation of southern Oregon, just north of Medford, overlooking the Rogue River. Soils are rocky clay loam, very well drained and planted 1088 vines per acre.

100% Viognier

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Beringer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
(Napa valley, California)

For the 2005 blend, a third of the fruit comes from the St. Helena Home Vineyard right next to the winery in St. Helena. Approximately 25 percent of the blend comes from Beringer’s renowned Bancroft Ranch on Howell Mountain and another 13 percent comes from Marston Vineyard on Spring Mountain. Small amounts of Cabernet from Quarry Vineyard in Rutherford, Rancho Del Oso Vineyard on Howell Mountain and Chabot Vineyard in St. Helena round out the blend, adding layers of fruit flavors.

Tasting notes from wine maker Laurie Hook:
This wine is immensely fun to make since we are really striving to make a wine that is appealing now, but also showcases Napa Valley Cabernet. The plump soft tannins and gorgeous fruit make this a very accessible, balanced and elegant wine.

As has become tradition with Beringer Cabernets, Ed and Laurie kept each lot separate through fermentation and aging to retain the individual expressions of the vineyards, giving them a broader array of aromatic, flavor and structural components to consider at blending time. After fermentation all of the lots were aged in approximately 80% new French Never oak barrels for 24 months. The winemakers tasted the lots regularly to monitor their development and get an idea of which wines would fit together best in the final blend. The addition of Cabernet Franc (7%) from Steinhauer Ranch and just a touch of Malbec (1%) completed the wine, which opens on the nose with succulent ripe black berries and hints of allspice and cedar. Dark, fruit flavors fill the mouth and transition into a structured and long finish with sweet vanilla and complemented by hints of Thai coffee and sarsaparilla.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec

Beer Club

Beer Club members receive 2 big bottles of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase.

Fine Beer Deschutes Black Butte 21 XXI
(Bend, Oregon)

The first thing you need to know about this beer is this:
Best After Date: 10/17/10

Yes, best *after* mid-October. This beer has been maturing for about a year just waiting to come visit you in Beer Club. Right now it’s completely delicious, but the Deschutes brewers feel that it will mature another few months, and perhaps long than that!

It was just announced that this years rendition, Black Butte XXII, will NOT be shipped, so Beer Club members have an even rarer bottle in that sense.

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.

Pair with: Flank Steak and Chimichurri Sauce, Crème Brulée, Cherries Jubilee, Strong Bleu Cheeses

11% ABV, 55 IBUs, 22 oz. bottle, Best After Date: 10/17/10

Fine Beer Grand Teton Tail Waggin White Wit Beer
(Victor, Idaho)

Listen to the brewery wax poetic about this beer:

Tail Waggin’ Double White Ale is brewed in the Belgian tradition, using malted barley, wheat malt, candi sugar and a unique touch—unmalted rye. Noble-type hops are used for balanced bitterness, with spices added in the whirlpool. We followed the Belgian tradition of using bitter orange peel and coriander, then added a bit of lemongrass to make our wit something special. Finally, we fermented the beer with a Belgian witbier yeast that adds its own complexity with spicy phenols and fruity esters.

Our wit pours a very hazy golden straw color, with a thin white head that clings to the glass. The aroma is very complex, showcasing notes of lemon, coriander, bubblegum and banana. The first sip tickles the tongue with a black pepper spiciness, which subsides into more mellow flavors of tart citrus fruits. A very effervescent mouthfeel leads to a crisp finish, making this the perfect beer for a warm afternoon.

This is an amazingly versatile beer with food, any time of day. Its orange notes pair nicely with eggs benedict and cheese omelettes, and its quenching acidity cuts right through the fattiness of bacon or spicy sausage. Try it as an aperitif, or with tangy or peppery cheeses. Nothing is better with salads, especially vinaigrettes, and it truly shines with seafood, particularly when served with lemon. White ale’s citrus and spice notes complement Mexican, Thai, and Indian dishes, which often include lime, cilantro, cumin, ginger or tamarind in their preparations. Don’t forget dessert–key lime or lemon meringue pie, citrus sorbets and tarts, orange chiffon cake.

Beginning with this ale, Grand Teton’s Cellar Reserve beers will be released in beautiful 750 ml bottles with pry-off crowns. We switched from our signature 1 liter flip-top bottles because the crown provides the best-quality seal available, protecting the beer from oxygen and maintaining its carbonation level. In addition, the new bottles are much lighter than our previous bottles, providing significant energy savings in their manufacture and transportation. Without the wire and ceramic stopper, our new bottles are easier to recycle. Finally, the new bottle is less expensive, and we’ve passed every bit of our cost savings on to the consumer.

7.2% ABV, 20 IBUs, 750ml Bottle
