Help the Flaherty Family: Art Benefit Auction Sunday

Sarah: Our health and our families are a huge blessing and I was reminded of that this week. When I walked in to Flaherty’s Framing and Fine Art I was greeted by the shop owner. As we were talking she mentioned she is putting on an art auction for her family who are overwhelmed with medical bills. Her Husband was just diagnosed in November with esophageal cancer and has begun chemotherapy treatment. The catch is that they are both self employed (much like Russell and myself) and only got the health insurance they could afford. Well, the deductible is long gone and chemotherapy pills are a whopping $2600 every three weeks! When I was a teenager my dad was diagnosed with a very aggressive type of cancer. My mom was left juggling bills and raising me while my dad tried to fight this terrible disease. I can somewhat understand what Flaherty family is going through. It’s a horrible thing for a family to go through but is made worse when there is no help. Flaherty’s Framing and Fine Art is putting on this auction to try and “free up” some of her inventory so she can help with the bills. She showed me around her lovely shop and I can tell you some amazing art will be up for auction. This isn’t to make profit but to simply liquidate some inventory, Flahrtys is Not going out of business, just trying to get through a tough time. She let me know that she needs to sell more tickets and so this is where you guys come in. Tickets are only $25, and the auction is this Sunday. I know it’s a bit of short notice but going to an art auction with hors d’ ourves doesn’t sound too bad, and in return you help a sweet family and get a great piece of art! Russell and I are going and if any of you would like to join us call Flahertys Fine Art and Framing to buy tickets.

Auction is This Sunday May 23rd at the Riverstone’s Hampton Inn
Doors open at 4:00pm
100% of the proceeds go to benefit the family
For tickets call 208-667-1963

Wine Review: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars pile

Russell: We hope to start providing a few wine & beer reviews for you in this space. We get to try so may unique and delicious beverages, and want to share those experiences in hopes that you can find something that might otherwise pass you up.

Writing Wednesday evening, tonight I am blessed with a handful of tastes from the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars lineup. All-around, these guys are making great wine. The picture above represents the daunting task that lies before me.

The first one I am going for is the Sauvignon Blanc, it’s delicious! Huge flavor, full of grassy notes, citrus fruit like grapefruit, lemon peel, etc. and a crisp bracing acidity on the mouth. Yum! Perfect high quality Sauv Blanc for hot weather. It’s 69% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Sauvignon Musque (new grape to me!), and 5% Semillon. Unique and special, and delicious!

Next I got into the Chardonnay, which goes by the first name of Karia. This is a wine without tons of oak, the winery says “butterfly kissed” with oak. They did it just right, letting the fruit shine through in all its tropical and citrus flavors, with just a hint of vanilla to bring it all home.

Merlot’s and me are buddies. This is no exception, nicely done, 10% Cab blended in, noticably so. I loved it because the flavor profile reminds me of Reininger Merlot from Walla Walla. For about 40% less money, I’ll stick to the Reininger. Putting these two bottles side-by-side would be a proof of the theory that Walla Walla is providing great value for the money. Anyone want to spot me on that? It’s for science!

Artemis is one of their Cabernet’s. This is pretty darn good, with 8% Merlot blended in. Sarah says it comes across as European in its wine making style. I really dig it, and it’s a quality Cab, with all that spice box character and heartiness, but in a medium bodied style that can actually pair well with food.

The Fay Cabernet comes next, now that stuff is good, no matter who you are. 100% Cab, and with the stuffing to prove it. Wow. Just fantastic.

The torture of my job continues, last one, the SLV Cab, also 100%. Sarah says this is coffee. All about the big coffeeness, and that’s a good thing in our house. She winced when I dumped mine out, it’s part of the job, you don’t think I can drink 6 full glasses of wine tonight do you?

Here’s the stats and winery tasting notes, if you’re interested you can place an order here.

White Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2007
A symphony of delicious flavors and aromas come together in this lively and vibrant wine, including ruby red grapefruit and lemonlime, peach and nectarine, tropical notes of guava and mango, and a hint of fresh-cut grass. Try this wine with grilled prawns and peach salsa, or a spring vegetable risotto with fresh spinach, asparagus and peas.
[Member: $25.19 / Retail: $27.99]

White Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2007
A cornucopia of aromas emerges from this wine, with apple, white peach and orange blossom joining subtle layers of roasted almond and vanilla cream. Similar flavors are enjoyed on the palate with additional citrus notes. A delicate honey tone is supported by bright acidity all the way through the toasty brioche finish. This versatile and food-friendly wine is easily enjoyed with butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter, shrimp scampi, or a pecan-crusted roast loin of pork.
[Member: $31.49 / Retail: $34.99]

Red Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Merlot 2006
This wine is wonderfully aromatic with intense fruit notes of cherry, pomegranate, plum and strawberry, laced with spicy accents of vanilla, white pepper, and cinnamon. The aromas carry over to the palate, with an additional touch of milk chocolate. Subtle tannins gently grip the palate of this gracefully structured wine. A versatile wine with holiday fare, from herb-stuffed turkey to crown roast of pork with cornbread stuffing.
[Member: $44.09 / Retail: $48.99]

Red Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Focused and complex, the wine opens with aromas and flavors of black fruit blackberry, currant, and plum that slowly give way to layers of nutmeg, rosemary, grilled game, and warm pie crust. This firmly structured and full-bodied wine gains depth and richness through the finish. Enjoy this wine with filet mignon with green peppercorn cream sauce or braised veal shanks with green olives and capers.
[Member: $53.99 / Retail: $59.99]

Red Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Fay Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
There is plenty to love about this stylish wine, starting with generous aromas of violets, blackberry, nutmeg, and black licorice reminiscent of Good ‘n Plenty candy. The aromas are followed by an alluring mix of dark fruit flavors that envelop the palate with accent notes of chocolate and vanilla. The 2005 FAY Cabernet Sauvignon is smooth and silky, with a richness and persistence all the way through the slightly smoky oak finish. Enjoy this expressive wine with Moroccan spiced lamb or duck with Port-cherry sauce.
[Member: $80.99 / Retail: $89.99]

Red Wine Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars SLV Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
A sweet, rich perfume of Bing cherry, blackberry, cassis, and rhubarb leads to savory aromas of licorice, cedar, truffles and toasted almonds. Similar flavors coat the palate with additional notes of cocoa powder and vanilla. The wine is generous in character and framed by silky, smooth tannins.
[Member: $107.99 / Retail: $119.99]

Charles Smith / K Vintners Old Bones, Skull, and Royal City Syrah – Preorder Special

K Vintners Charles Smith

Russell: Have you heard or tried the top-of-the line from Charles Smith / K Vintners? Right now we have an opportunity to pre-request / pre-order the 2007 vintage of Old Bones, Skull, and Royal City Syrah.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you about the point scores these wines have received in past vintages, but let us indulge for a moment:

Royal City 2006 – 100 points, Wine Enthusiast “#2″ Top 100 Wines 2009
Skull 2005 – 98 Points Robert Parker
Old Bones 2005 – 99 Points Robert Parker

Here’s a description that was given of the 2006 Royal City:

In 2005 Charles Smith introduced three high-end Syrahs, all from the same vineyard, Heart, Skull and Old Bones. In 2006 Smith has made a wine better than each of these by combining them into a single wine–Royal City Syrah. Rich scents of purple fruit, smoked meat, cedar, pencil lead, moist earth and so on proclaim a wine with genuine gravitas. There is nothing missing, from the first sniff to the last sip, the wine delivers on all levels. Complex, beautifully balanced, powerful and detailed.

Back to the offer:

The release is scheduled for mid-August, but because of the high demand on these bottles, pre-orders are being taken now. An order is more of a request, so place an order for the maximum you are willing to buy and we will do our best to fill your order first. An order with us consists of your request and payment information on file, which will not be charged until we have the wine in our store and ready for you to pick up.

Pricing is as follows:

Skull: [Member: $98.99 / Retail: $109.99]
Old Bones: [Member: $116.99 / Retail: $129.99]
Royal City: [Member: $98.99 / Retail: $109.99]

For this offer, if you order 6 bottles or more, we are offering a 15% discount, so here is the quantity pricing:

Skull: $93.49 / bottle
Old Bones: $110.49 / bottle
Royal City: $93.49 / bottle

We’re not sure yet how much of these wines we’ll be able to lock in, but knowing how much you want as soon as possible will help us to lock up more.

Shipping is now available, so if you need this service, let us know with your order.

Lastly, if you know someone who may be interested in this offer, please feel free to forward this on to them. We will be filling orders Wine Club members first, email list members 2nd, and if there is wine left over, other requests will be filled.

While we’re at it, I might as well mention the Charles Smith / K Vintners Spring Release tasting we’re holding on the 27th of May. You can find complete details below, it should be a fun time, and we’ll have assistant wine maker Andrew Latta on hand to talk about the wine, perhaps autograph some bottles!

Remember the Orphan Shelf – 20% Off Yummy Wine & Beer

Orphan Annie What is the Orphan Shelf? It’s our fun way of closing out wine & beer to make way for the new stuff. It’s located right at the checkout counter, and we offer a 20% discount on these products to our Wine & Beer of the Month Club Members.

Why are products orphaned? Well, basically they are forgotten. Selling great one week and yesterdays news the next. Forgotten greats that need a home. Maybe the label isn’t show stopping or it’s from an area people are not familiar with so it just sits quietly, patently waiting to be adopted. Open your heat and mind these are really great wines!

The orphan shelf has had some recent admittants. Several bottles of wine were discovered that have been waiting for a home, and some beer has even migrated to the orphan shelf. Club members receive a 20% discount whenever they adopt an orphan. Find it in your heart.

A wide range of very delicious bottles are currently up for adoption. Come peer into the glassed-over eyeballs of these little fellas and see if one of them doesn’t tug at your heart. Pleeeze sir, can I have some more?
