Big Red Zinfandel Wine Tasting this weekend
Start the weekend out right at Enoteca – Fine Wine & Beer!
This Friday from 12-7 Enoteca will be sharing a selection of big red Zinfandel. Yum yum! We’ll be tasting these wines Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to beat the rush!
We want to give you the opportunity to “try before you buy” so we offer a flight of wine for a low cost. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 5 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up with a glass.
(Amador County, California)
It has always been the passion of Folie à Deux to craft wines that will deliver a delightful shared experience.
Named for the French term meaning “shared fantasies,” Folie à Deux wines represent the fulfillment of a dream to create a beautiful dance of flavors and true varietal expression.
This Zinfandel offers complex aromas of plum and cherry with just a hint of spicy clove followed by bold flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and plum. Smooth through to the lingering, juicy finish, this wine showcases the classic Zinfandel spice and fruit characteristics for which Amador County is renowned.
83% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 5% Teroldego
12 months in French and American oak
(Amador County, California)
Named for the visiting mountain lion whose tracks are often seen in the vineyard. This is a very stylish and likable wine. It has forward aromas of licorice and mint chocolate. The flavors are rich, full, and reminiscent of ripe, dusty blackberries and cranberry juice. The finish is crisp and lingering. This wine has a distinct “peppery” component. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
95% Estate Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah
Aged 12 months in French & American Oak, 30% new.
(Sonoma County, California)
Our 2006 Sonoma County Zinfandel was produced from fruitgrown on our Dry Creek Valley ranch and our Alexander Valley Estate. Following a cool spring and hot summer, the grapes were beautifully mature and ripe, which is a good thing. We picked the Zinfandel quickly over a two night period and once crushed, the juice was placed in small open-top fermentors. Most of the 2006 lots went through extended post fermentation to extend the fruit quality and color. The finished wine is both rich and complex with flavors typical of our Estate fruit. Aromas of cherries, plum and anise lead to layers of blackberry, herbs, cedar and tobacco. The finish is long and sweet with firm tannins that will allow cellaring for 4-6 years. However, please enjoy a bottle this evening.
DOUBLE GOLD – 2008 California Zinfandel Championship
90% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah, 1% Carignane
15 months in 20% new American and European Oak, 80% two-three year.
(High Valley, California)
Concentrated sweet fruits of black cherry, blackberry and currants are fused into a brambly mixture with vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper and hints of soy and sassafras adding additional complexity. The alcohol is well balanced by the depth of fruit in the nose, and the lovely, round body of the wine. Soft, integrated tannins complete the big, sumptuous mouth feel and finish to this ever-popular varietal.
92% Zinfandel, 8% Syrah
19 months in French, American and Hungarian oak, 30% new
(Paso Robles, California)
After two wet winters, 2007 was considerably drier; these struggling eighty-five-year-old vines set a small crop. Summer heat accentuated water stress, and we harvested in late August to avoid over-ripening. The clusters — small, and with tiny berries — were destemmed and crushed as separate parcels to submerged-cap tanks for natural-yeast fermentation. This gentle approach produced balanced tannins and moderate color. We pressed on day six, and included press fractions for depth of color and added richness. The uninoculated secondary, slow to start, finished quickly, allowing us to put the lots to barrel by year’s end. At spring rack, when clear wine is separated from the sediment, we selected four of the five, and bottled early to maintain the balance of fresh fruit and oak. Enjoyable now, this appealing Paso Robles will be at its best over the next four to five years.
Tasting Notes (March 2009) – Fresh-baked cherry pie, candied plum, sundried cherries, ripe bramble fruit, creamy texture. Accessible structure. Delicious now.
92 Points – Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine
100% Zinfandel from 85 year old vines
10 months in 100% air-dried american oak barrels (9% new, 41% one and two years old, 50% three years old)
Remember the Orphans – 20% Off Tasty Wine
What is the Orphan Shelf? It’s our fun way of closing out wine & beer to make way for the new stuff.
It’s located right at the checkout counter, and we offer a 20% discount on these products to
our Wine & Beer of the Month Club Members.
Why are products orphaned? Well, basically they are forgotten. Selling great one week and yesterdays news the next. Forgotten greats that need a home. Maybe the label isn’t show stopping or it’s from an area people are not familiar with so it just sits quietly, patently waiting to be adopted. Open your heat and mind these are really great wines!
The orphan shelf has had some recent admittants. Several bottles of wine were discovered that have been waiting for a home, and some beer has even migrated to the orphan shelf. Club members receive a 20% discount whenever they adopt an orphan. Find it in your heart.
A wide range of very delicious bottles are currently up for adoption. Come peer into the glassed-over eyeballs of these little fellas and see if one of them doesn’t tug at your heart. Pleeeze sir, can I have some more?

Here’s Certified Sommelier Michael Williams’ description of what to expect:
For hundreds of years, the world has coveted and paid staggering prices for the great wines of France. As a result, regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, and Champagne have imprinted themselves on a wider consciousness than just the wine world. This has created a pervasive belief that great French wine is expensive. Come find out why this is not true while enjoying some fabulous (and affordable) French wines in a fun, relaxed environment. Learn about regions such as Beaujolais (the truth, not the “nouveau”) and Alsace while discovering some hidden treasures from the heavy-hitting Bordeaux region. Allow Michael Williams, Certified Sommelier, to help you turn up your nose at snobbery by introducing you to the rich winemaking traditions of France you can enjoy without jeopardizing your retirement.$10 per person, Reserve your tickets early.

David Landis represents the premium marquee brand of Pahlmeyer, a cult status winery from Napa Valley. Pahlmeyer is a brand that has enlisted the wine making talent of Randy Dunn (Dunn Cabernet, Long Shadows Feather Cabernet), Bob Levy (Harlan Estates), Helen Turley, David Abreu, and Erin Green (Sonoma-Cutrer, Colgin, Bryant Family and Martinelli). Consulting is done by Michel Rolland, winemaker of Long Shadows Pedestal Merlot, Ornellaia, and more.
The first wine out of Pahlmeyer earned 94 points from the renowned Robert Parker, shocking wine connoisseurs and critics nationwide. The concept is “Bordeaux in California” and he seems to be succeeding.
