Russell Said Beer, Sarah Said Wine

Russell: Wow – tons to talk about at Enoteca this week, we have tastings galore, including the impossible-to-overhype Orin Swift tasting Thursday the 10th, local legend wine maker Mike Scott of Lone Canary visiting Friday with his newest releases and premium offerings, a “reorganization sale” going on, and what’s this? Something on TAP? Today I had the sublime experience of pulling a red handle at Enoteca and filling a glass with some uber-hoppy goodness known as Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA. You can fill a growler for just $19.99 if you’re one of the first 9 people to visit before it’s gone. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know what’s on tap regularly via FaceBook, Twitter, and this newsletter. But I digress, the hops have gone to my head, darling can you start us off by telling us why on God’s green earth there is a sale at Enoteca?

Sarah: Well, we are running out of room at Enoteca. We need more Club Member Bins, more beer shelves and more wine space. People keep showing up and wanting to participate, and we love to respond to special requests so we’ve gotten to bulging at the seams! I have reorganized a few times already but again I find myself squeezing every last drop of usable space the place can spare. (pun!) This particular move will be a doozy and since we have done this before, I have learned that the fewer the bottles to shuffle around the better!

Russell: We’ll probably be done with the sale before the 26th, Saturday, at 7:30, when Stone Brewing Company of San Diego will be here to pour some beer! Tickets are limited and waning, check out the calendar for deets and sign up. Thank you to the folks who have notified me of foolish date/day discrepancies in last week’s newsletter. There is no excuse, this week’s has been meticulously updated, and probably introduced new errors. I digress. Dear, what do you think of the tasty stuff that’s on sale?

Sarah: I had fun picking the sale items out with you honey. I wish we had more space at home because I would be picking things off the shelves like flowers! For example, those cute little 33cl bottles of Chimay on the chopping block. They would be great for poker night. Or the New Belgium stuff, 1554 has been a loyal favorite of mine for years not to mention one of the first beers I have ever had!

And I see that you put some Saisons up for adoption as well. Saison is the Viognier of beers to me, refreshing yet slightly creamy. This is the perfect time of year to be drinking them! You know how I see a deal and stock up, I have about fifty different papyrus greeting cards in my desk for the right occasion. Think of the occasions coming we could use this beer for, Oktoberfest is right around the corner! Remember the party we were invited to last year? We brought several different beers to share. It was a great party even though I fell asleep.

Russell: That’s because you work too hard, and party even harder. I remember having a Stone Imperial Russian Stout float there. That would be 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, and fill ‘er up with IRS. Once the ice cream melted it was indescribably tasty. By the way, I love that you like Saisons. It warms my heart cockles. Some beers you haven’t mentioned yet that are discounted are the 15%+ABV Beast series from Avery, Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws which I challenge any self-proclaimed tough-guy or girl to finish just one bottle, and even some of the uber Belgian Gouden Carolous. Anywho…

Sarah: Did you know I had a sales person call me the other day wanting me to buy Valentines day stuff for the store? Valentines day, are you kidding me!? Leaves haven’t even begun to turn colors! I’m already having to think about Thanksgiving and Christmas earlier than I would like. For example, we have these 10 and 11 year old Moët Champagnes on sale that will be perfect for Christmas parties, and Roederer Rose would be great with Thanksgiving dinner. We have the Sheridan wines on sale which reminded me of chocolate and figs (amazing wine!), and some really nice half bottles that I would personally use as stocking stuffers. I’m not kidding either! If you don’t buy them that’s exactly what I’m going to do too!

Russell: Please folks, save my stockings, I beg. The 1/2 bottles are great for hiding in your desk at work, sneaking into movies, and opening after the first bottle is gone and you don’t think you can manage an entire 2nd bottle. On deck for wine on sale are some heavy hitters like Opus One, Caymus Special Select, BV Georges Latour, as well as “local” favorites Helix by Reininger, Latitude 46 N with their perfumey Syrah and Vindication blend, Portteus, and more. But why am I talking about wine and you’re talking about beer? Just come check out the sale items, help us out folks! The sale ends when we find the time to re-arrange, expected to be within a week or two. Sarah’s going to be here for the Orin Swift tasting Thursday, what other exciting tastings do we have coming up?

Sarah: I’m excited about the upcoming luxury wine tastings. In the next couple of months we are offering tastings of Caymus Special Select, Col Solare, Spring Valley Frederick, Orin Swift Mercury Head, Mer Soleil, Belle Glos Pinot, and more. We don’t get to drink these every day! I remember being a customer at Enoteca before we became owners. You know how it is to sweat over a big ticket bottle of wine? Boy if it doesn’t taste good I want to freak! We’d ask questions and listen to the advice, but there’s still a big risk there! The opportunity to taste premium wine before you buy it is something I have learned is typically reserved for wholesale buyers and restaurateurs. Even then heavy hitters are rarely opened. When a tasting like this comes up I get excited that we can offer this opportunity! You can taste the wine and know exactly what you like about it and even think about the occasion you want to use it for. So take advantage of one or more of these truly special events.

Russell: You can check out the event calendar here and use the new RSVP form to buy your tickets. Also, don’t forget to help Sarah out with her She Said icon poll, you can vote here. She doesn’t know I put that up here, so let it be our little secret :)
