A Note from Russell

It’s time for Wine & Beer of the Month Club again! We have some exciting selections this month, including a new wine from Orin Swift, the winery famous for the Prisoner, and a few choices from Hannah Nicole, a small family winery in Contra Costa county. We met wine maker Neil Cohn a few months back, he’s related to wine club member Pamela Downs (Bin #248) and he shared his tasty wines with us. We liked them so much we want to share them with you, and here they are!

The beer selections are both from Idaho, so hurray for locally made high quality brew! I’ll try to send out a more detailed beermail this week, but in the meantime you should know that we have a tiny bit of Russian River Pliny the Elder (rare fresh hop DIPA) available, and Dogfish Head 120 Minute IIPA (20% ABV), as well as Boulevard’s Double Wide IPA. Hop heads need to come get in on some of these great bottles, and if that’s not your thing, we also have a great growing selection of malty, dark and see-through beers available!

Learn more about the selections below, and consider visiting us on Friday from 4-7 as we pour these wines, or Saturday from 12-7.

We hope your spring is going well, enjoy the weather while it’s here and stop in for some wine and beer!

The wine and beer for this month’s club has arrived and will be in your Bin on Friday, June 1st! If you’re not a Club Member yet, learn about the Wine & Beer Club?

Wine & Beer Club is rolling out this Friday, and tasting is from 4-7 Friday. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines – red or white).

The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine Dusted Valley Vineyards Boomtown Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

What can we say about this brand new vintage from Corey and Chad at Dusted Valley? Well, see what Harvey Steiman at Wine Spectator had to say:
Bright, fresh and exuberant, with nicely focused, vivid currant and spice flavors, hinting at coffee on the expressive finish. Drink now through 2012.
89 points Wine Spectator

What we like about this wine is that it can be had for under $15 and it spent 16 months on 50% new French Oak. That’s a price to value ratio that is unbeatable. A true blue big boys Cabernet from Washington State, well built and ready to rumble. BOOMtown.

White Wine Hannah Nicole Le Mélange Blanc 2007
(Contra Costa County, California)

This 2007 Le Mélange Blanc, The White Blend, is an artistic blend of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc aged and fermented in both stainless steel and oak. Citrus, vanilla and a bouquet of fruit leap from the glass in this perfectly balanced white wine. Best served lightly chilled, this wine will make you reach for another glass!

55% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Viognier

Reserve Club

Red Wine Hannah Nicole Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
(Contra Costa County, California)

This 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is full of ripe fruit flavors with eucalyptus, mint, white pepper on the nose and black cherry, tar and a ribbon of caramel on the palate. Lush firm tannins finish strong producing a Cabernet showing classic Brentwood terroir notable for a hint of cocoa that lingers on.

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc

White Wine Hannah Nicole Viognier 2007
(Contra Costa County, California)

This 2007 Viognier jumps from the glass with hints of peach, apricot, honeysuckle and pear. The addition of 2% barrel aged Sauvignon Blanc lends a citrus and vanilla note that finishes crisply leaving you thirsting for more! Grown in a region quickly being recognized as one of the best sites for Viognier in California! Enjoy!

90% Stainless Steel Fermented Viognier, 8% Barrel Aged Viognier,2% Sauvignon Blanc

Premier Club

Red Wine Orin Swift Saldo Zinfandel 2007
(California)

Gaining experience and contacts in the Northern California Zinfandel growing community through the success of his Prisoner label, Orin Swift Cellars owner/winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in California. Dave recently decided he wanted to make a high quality Zinfandel and what he created did not fit the constraints of a single AVA.

The term “saldo” has many different meanings in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish it mainly refers to “balance on hand”, and sometimes it can mean “from here and there”. This wine represents the best of the best lots made by Dave from vineyards all across Northern California.

Here’s where it comes from: 54% Sonoma, 16% Napa, 15% Mendocino, 9% Amador, 6% Contra Costa

The 2007 Saldo has a deep dark ruby color. It has aromas of red raspberry, ribena, campfire, toast and sweet vanilla. On the palette there is wild strawberry, rhubarb, and sassafras. The wine is expansive with a 30 plus second finish. There is an impression of cherry pie on the end. Drink now and enjoy over the next five years.

Wow, what a heavy hitter! We tasted this recently and just HAD to share it with the wine club. Those who remember The Prisoner will not be suprised by how fantastic this wine is. Dave Finney has done it again with this limited production gem. Take this home and drink it soon and get your follow up orders in ASAP as this will not be available for long!

85% Zinfandel, 10% Syrah, 5% Petite Syrah

White Wine Conte d’Attimis-Maniago Pinot Grigio 2006
(Friuli, Italy)

Straw yellow colour with slightly coppery undertones: the characteristic bouquet, elegant and intense is rich in oak, walnut husk, yellow peaches and golden apples. Harmonious and sophisticated with marked yeasty hints, acquired after maturation “sur lies”. The wine is lively on the palate where it becomes full and velvety with very persistent ripe fruit flavours. Backing this up is a good degree of alcohol and a pleasant crispness.

Food and wine pairings: An excellent aperitif and hors d’oeuvres wine, it is ideal served with raw and cooked seafood. Superb accompaniment to fish, crustaceans, and clear soups. Sublime when served with San Daniele ham.

100% Pinot Grigio

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Bocchino Suo Giacomo 2004
(Langhe, Italy)

A stunning food wine, this seamless blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera from Bocchino typifies his style of “21st Century Classico”. A traditional blend made in a bold, luscious style, this wine opens with the friendly cranberry appeal of the Barbera, crisp and medium bodied, and unfolds into greater complexity as the Nebbiolo darkens and deepens the fruits into plums, black cherry, and sage dust. Bocchino is a cult figure in Barolo, and we understand why.

60% Nebbiolo, 40% Barbera

Beer Club

Beer Club members receive 2 bottles of beer made in Idaho this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase.

Fine Beer Grand Teton Double Vision Dopplebock Cellar Reserve Reinheitsgebot 2009
(Victor, Idaho)

Brewery’s notes:
Double Vision Dopplebock highlights our brewery’s wonderful glacial spring water and was brewed in strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot. This beer has a luxurious tan head anda bready aroma with a hint of smoke and is dark leather in color with ruby notes. It is lightly spiced with Liberty hops, an American version of the noble German Hallertau Mittelfruh, and fermented with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. Doppelbocks were developed by the 17th century Paulist monks of Munich. To help them through the Lenten and Advent fasts, they brewed and especially nourishing dark lager they called “liquid bread” and named “Holy Father.” Try pairing with wild game, venison, goose, duck, wild boar, with aged gruyere, caramel flan, crème brulee or tart tatin.

8% ABV, 1L bottle, blissfully non-wax topped.

Fine Beer Laughing Dog Devil Dog 2009
(Sandpoint, Idaho)

Brewery’s notes:
The Devil Dog will chew you up and leave you whimpering for more. At 98 IBU’s and 5.2 pounds of hops to the barrel it is an all out assault on the senses. Devil Dog started as a laborador of love but quickly took on a life of its own, leaving us drooling like Pavlov’s dogs at the mere mention of its name. Triple dry hopped and at 10% ABV, more than one of these bad boys will cause you to howl at passing strangers and chew up your toys, or anything else you can get your sharp little teeth on.

10% ABV, 98 IBUs, 22 oz. bottle
