A Note from Russell

Spring has finally sprung in north Idaho and everybody’s headed outdoors! We’ve been enjoying the weather with the kids and some fine beers. A couple days ago I opened up the Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel beer. It’s [Member: $14.39 / Retail: $15.99] and it’s made with Civet Coffee. If you’ve seen the Morgan Freeman / Jack Nicholson movie The Bucket List, you’ll remember the expensive coffee that Jack drinks that passes through the digestive system of the Asian Palm Civet Weasel. Here’s some more info on the Kopi Luwak stuff, but more importantly, it’s fantastic in this beer! It’s an Imperial Oatmeal Stout with an incredibly strong and intense flavor that you simply must try if you like dark and strong beer.

The wine tasting this weekend will be fun to compare Cabernet Sauvignon’s, one of the more highly regarded red wine varieties, from a few different regions. For the white wine die-hards, we do have a fantastic Sauvignon Blanc in the oaked style to open up. If you like “big Cab” or if you want to try a few out, come visit us on Friday between 4 and 7, or on Saturday between 12 and 7.

We hope your holiday was restful and your spring is fun! Check out the fun events calendar below, we have a bunch of great tastings planned this summer.

Cabernet Showdown Wine Tasting This Weekend

Start the weekend out right at Enoteca – Fine Wine & Beer!

This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be sharing a selection of Cabernet Sauvignons from around the world.

We want to give you the opportunity to “try before you buy” so we offer a flight of wine for a low cost. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 4 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up with a glass. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a good time to beat the rush.

White Wine Joseph Phelps Sauvignon Blanc 2005
(Napa Valley, California)

Winemaker Craig Williams says:
The 2005 Sauvignon Blanc has aromatic characteristics ranging from floral and mineral notes to citrus and green melon. The expressive palate is clean and balanced with excellent richness and length.

A full-bodied, balanced Sauvignon Blanc, this wine shows fresh, fruity, slightly grassy aromas and multi-layered flavors of melon, fig and tropical fruit offset by a touch of oak, ending a clean, citrusy finish.
Whoa! Oaked Sauvignon Blanc?! We’ve gotten used to New Zealand style Sauv Blanc, with its crispness, fruityness and all that acidic jazz. When we opened this Joe Phelps bottle it just blew us away by being very Chardonnayesqe. Full flavored, creamy, vanillan, and rich. It is a Sauv Blanc to enjoy as the weather cools down.

90% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Semillon

[Member: $29.69 / Retail: $32.99]

Red Wine Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon
(Mendoza, Argentina)

This wine presents a dark purple color with garnet tones. The nose is explosive, with red fruit flavors, sweet spice and a touch of fresh mint. The mouthfeel is full yet soft, with red currant and cassis fruit layered with notes of cigar box, leather and light notes of eucalyptus. The finish is focused, with finely grained tannins adding structure and length.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

[Member: $10.79 / Retail: $11.99]

Red Wine Glen Eldon Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
(Barossa Valley, Australia)

This deep red brick Cabernet exhibits a nose of blackcurrant, plum and chocolate and a palate of mixed berries, plum, chocolate and spice.

Enjoy this wine with oven roasted duck, game or a chunk of parmesan.

95 Points James Halliday, 90 Points Stephen Tanzer

Here’s what Josh Reynolds had to say:

Spicy red and dark berry flavours are impressively precise and nicely framed by fine-grained tannins. Develops a chewy texture with air and finishes bright and fresh, with repeating mineral and floral pastille notes and impressive persistence.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a good bottle of wine! Smoothe and well-rounded, doing Cabernet the Australian style!

[Member: $25.19 / Retail: $27.99]

Red Wine Reininger Helix Cabernet Sauvignon
(Columbia Valley, Washington)

Yoga for the Palate! Permit this wine to open for a while. As the name Helix implies, let this Cabernet go round and round on your palate while sitting straight and relaxed. Without swallowing, slowly inhale once or twice to unravel the black raspberry, plum and cassis layered with caramelized oak, a barely perceptible hint of clove and very fine tannins. Exhale. Life is goood.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

[Member: $22.49 / Retail: $24.99]

The first time I heard of the Kermit Lynch portfolio was from Wine Club Member Bob Carmichael (Bin #103). When I got to meet someone from the importer, I was thrilled, and he was gracious enough to pour several of the French wines for me. Four of them are now on the shelf at Enoteca – Fine Wine & Beer, including a fantastic Beaujolais Villages, a reasonably priced Bordeaux, a dry and yummy spring time Rosé, and an Alsacian White.

It turns out that Laurent Zirotti of Fleur de Sel has been a fan of the Kermit Lynch portfolio since he had access to them in Billings. Put 1 and 1 and 1 together and PRESTO, we will be holding a fun, educational, and most of all TASTY wine dinner on June 9th!
