A Note from Russell
Thanks for reading the Enoteca Newsletter, we hope to make it worth your while with info on upcoming events,
tasting notes on the Wine & Beer Club selections for November, and a few extras.
For the tasting notes, you’ll notice that there is an italicized part on some of the notes. These are our personal comments, as set apart from the official information on each wine. Since we’ve added some Club Member Bins, those of you who were without Bins now have one, and those of you who have been wanting to join the Club can now join with a Bin. Come on in and check it out!
Did you miss the Mercer Estates wine tasting? We have a review and some info on the wines, including the opportunity to start a Vertical with a high quality, up-and-coming winery, at affordable prices and starting with the first vintage! This is a great opportunity to start wine collecting.
Beer gift packs are now available, which are great for that craft beer fiend in your family or office. We’re also making great looking wine based gift baskets and gift boxes (wooden wine boxes!).
Our first wine makers dinner is coming in December. Read about the menu at Fleur de Sel and the Gifford Hirlinger winery below.

The lineup for Club and Tasting:
Vintage Club
(Dunnigan Hills, California)
As a farm kid growing up in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s John Giguiere (Founder) was a confirmed pyromaniac starting various things on fire such as his father’s wheat field. At one point, fearing total ruin from his kids burning him out of the house and farm, his father took them to the city jail for an hour stay to impress upon his brother and him the futility of their fascination with fire. John and his brother answered at a later date by graduating from random fires to the launching of rockets which often blew up at some stage of the it’s journey resulting in more random fires and a call to the local fire department for help. They eventually grew out of this fascination with the “Matchbook” but still have fond memories of the power they possessed.
This is a full bodied red with fresh blackberry and blueberry flavors, a touch of smokiness and a hint of vanilla and spice on the finish. Enjoy it with spicy sausages, cured meats and many grilled meats such as chicken, beef and lamb. Don’t forget your roasted vegetables on the side.
This is one bold, forward bottle of wine. It’s almost rustic and perhaps the suggestion of “Matchbook” helps in sometimes percieving a flavor of charred wood.
82% Syrah, 10% Malbec, 7% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Tempranillo.
(Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany)
This wine comes from the village of Piesport in the Michelsberg vineyard. It was harvested at Qualitätswein ripeness levels, and is produced in the Kabinett sweetness style, which is German for off-dry. This Kabinett Riesling is a stunning wine with long, complex flavors of ripe apples and a hint of grapefruit. It has a rich, luxurious textures and refreshing, palate-cleansing acidity. Fresh and lively, this brightly fruited, tart wine excels with supreme vitality, finishing crisp with just a hint of sweetness.
This Riesling is slightly fruity with a refreshing finish, and is perfect for Turkey day!
100% Riesling
Reserve Club
(Columbia Valley, Washington)
This is a “cab drinkers Merlot” from Camaraderie. The grapes are from Chandler Reach, within eyeshot of Red Mountain, and Fred Artz’ vineyard on Red Mountain at the far eastern end of the Yakima Valley. About 1/3 of this Merlot came from Butch Milbrandt’s Clifton Hill Vineyard up on the Wahluke Slope.
Grapes from these vineyards make for structured wines that might be confused with the mouthfeel of Cabernet Sauvignon, except for the mid-palate. This isn’t a lightweight Merlot, it’s full of blackberry and cherry and is chewy – not to excess, with oak but definitely a wine that will be enjoyed most by folks who like to carry on a dialog with their wine.
Give this one some time in the bottle. Merlot in Washington State is world class and should not be confused with quaffing wine Miles hated in the movie Sideways.
Yummy! This is a world class style of Merlot from Washington State. After meeting wine maker, owner, janitor extrordinairre from Camaraderie Cellars, Don Corson, I heartily recommend any of his wines, especially this Merlot. Don is a great guy and makes an honest bottles of wine.
90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc
(Columbia Valley, Washington)
Lush and creamy, this mouth-filling wine hints of freshly baked apple pie wrapped around a core of ripe pear, crisp apple and a hint of citrus. Richly-textured and supple on the palate, with a generous, concentrated finish.
-Mike Januik, wine maker
I love Burgundian styled Chardonnay. By using the right Chardonnay clones, using new and year old French oak barrels, malolactic fermentation, and sur lie ageing, Mike Januik has created an excellent single vineyard, estate vineyard, French style of Chardonnay.
100% Chardonnay
Premier Club
(Columbia Valley, Washington)
Yellow Hawk’s premium Northwest blend inspired by great Chiantis. Select barrels from their best lots are blended and barrel aged for 17 months in carefully selected oak. Dark ripe blackberry, blackstrap molasses, fig, clove and licorice elements combine with integrated oak for a supple wine with structure, a solid foundation and long finish. Wonderful with osso bucco, game meats, lamb, roasted or grilled vegetables, cassoulet, and red Italian anything.
This is one great bottle of wine! It’s sold out at the winery, but we got a hold of some to share with our Premier Red Club Members. It comes across to me like a Washington Super Tuscan, which is an Italian style blending traditional grapes like Sangiovese with Bordelaise grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhone grapes like Syrah. Give this baby a whirl with some pasta bolognese!
45% Sangiovese, 33% Syrah, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon
(Dundee Hills, Oregon)
Ripe, healthy fruit was hand-picked into small totes, and then whole-cluster pressed. Half of the juice was fermented in French Oak barrels (10% new) to create a round, rich texture. The other half fermented and aged in a stainless steel tank to maintain the purest and most elegant expression of Chardonnay. After eight months, these two styles were blended to create a cuvée of a more delicate nature – a blend of pure Chablis and a gentle Meursault.
As I said of the Novelty Hill Chardonnay, I *love* white Burgundy. At a recent dinner at Fleur de Sel several incredible red wines were poured, but the one that stood out to me was Meursault Blanc, which is a French white Burgundy, a.k.a. Chardonnay. As a side note, the rare Meursault Rouge (Pinot Noir) is on Enoteca’s shelf, and it’s all about cherries and spice. Back to the point, along comes this wine, made by the Drouhin family, specifically by 4th generation wine maker Veronique Drouhin-Boss. The Drouhin’s have been making top shelf red and white Burgundy in France, and in 1987 began their investment in Oregon. Long story short, this is to me an excellent Chardonnay, some oak / butter / toast notes, lots of bright fruit, and an ageing profile that beats a lot of red wines.
100% Chardonnay
Anniversary Club Red
(Paso Robles, California)
The 2006 Savant is dark ruby in color with a slight crimson hue. Aromas of spice, cedar box and caramel surround plum and black cherry in this barrel fermented red blend. The entry is soft and supple, echoing the spice and red fruit found in the nose. The mid palate balances the bright fruit of Syrah with the power and acidity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Structured, integrated tannins from the 60% new oak evolve into a lush velvety finish garnished with flavors of cocoa, coffee and mint.
Justin Winery makes incredible Paso Robles wines such as Isosceles, Justin Orphan, and Obtuse Port. This is one of their rare, limited release wines and Enoteca – Fine Wine and Beer has it! Anniversary Wine Club is the place to be to get your hands on world class wine month after month. This one deserves to be aged for a couple of years (winery recommends 2010) before opening, but we’ll be opening it this Friday for glass pours.
59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Syrah
Beer Club
Beer Club members receive 4 bottles of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase. The Abbey of St-Remy, in the southern part of Belgium, was founded in 1230, and the monks began to brew beer sometime around 1595. The beautiful small brewery in the abbey, Rochefort Trappistes, is one of only seven Trappist breweries in the world (all 7 are represented on Enoteca’s shelf) and makes full-bodied, deeply flavored dark ales. They are bottle-conditioned and among the world’s most highly-respected beverages.
This beer is dark brown color. Great strength balanced by a complexity of flavors and firm malt backbone. The bouquet covers a wide range: port wine, leather, apricots, oak, spices – a deeply intriguing beverage.
Serve with lamb shanks with juniper berries, wild chantrelle mushrooms, truffles, or dishes with intensely reduced sauces. Serve in the traditional stemmed Trappist style goblet, or a brandy snifter at about 60-65 degrees F.
There’s really nothing like this beer. It’s got a smooth nearly milky creaminess that just flows on in. It’s pretty rare too, considered in all the “top ten” lists of beer worldwide. I’ve been working for 2 years to have enough at one time to share with the Beer Club. Here you go members, Salute!
11.3% ABV, 11.2 oz. Bottle
The color is bright, with deep golden hues. Sweet toasty grainy malt. Medium body. Chewy and fizzy. Big clean sweet malt with just enough noble hop flavor and bitterness for balance. Perfecto!
As Sarah put it: “That’s easy to drink, this could be dangerous.” This is a smooth, light, easy drinking Marzen style beer. The monks are at it again with their beer makin’ ways. Don’t miss out on this one. Serve it for everyone with Thanksgiving dinner!
50 cl. Flip Top Bottle
In 1996, Sierra Nevada created Harvest Ale, America’s first fresh hop ale. Fresh hops are richer in natural hop resins producing unmatched aromatics and layers of spicy-sweet notes that hop fanatics dream of all year. This year, they harvested and brewed with 8,000 lbs. of fresh hops in a single day’s time. Harvest Ale is brewed using only fresh-picked, “wet” hops. Brewing with fresh, undried hops preserves more natural hop resins and aromatic oils, producing layers of hop notes rarely experienced.
6.7% ABV, 60-65 IBUs, 24 oz. Bottle
An intense hop experience. Here’s what the Boston Beer Company has to say:
Yes, we’re a little obsessed with hops. Every autumn for over twenty years, Jim Koch has traveled to one of the oldest hop-growing regions in the world, the Hallertau region of Bavaria in Germany, to hand-select Noble Bavarian hops, including the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety. This special variety is considered to be one of the best in the world, prized for its unique taste and aroma. Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of these extraordinary hops. This beer is one of the hoppiest in the world, without being overly bitter. With the first sip, you will experience an explosion of some of the world’s finest hops. And we mean “explosion” in a good way. Brewed as a showcase for the hops, this bold brew highlights the spicy, citrus flavors and aromas of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops that are abundant in the recipe. The intense hops flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. The brew remains pleasantly well-balanced from beginning to end, due to the quality of the hops, and continues to always be, well, “hoppy,” providing hop lovers with an amazing beer drinking experience. For a mind-bending experience, try this beer. It’s a “pilsner” but it’s not what you think of as a pilsner.
12 lbs of hops per barrel
8.1% ABV, 12 oz. Bottles

November Beer Tasting
Lang Brewing with John Campbell
|
Lang Beer Tasting Thursday, November 20th Tasting at 7:30 p.m. Only $10 per person |
Nestled on a hill overlooking the Thompson River Valley lies a brewery housed in what was once an aircraft hangar.
Built through hard work and passion, Lang Creek Brewery has been in Montana since 1993. The founder, John Campbell
took a leap of faith and decided to combine his two passions, flying and brewing, to produce flight themed ales
brewed in the English tradition. If by chance you are lucky enough to meet John, you will understand his reasoning
for creating America’s most remote brewery. To live life by a different set of rules is something that is a part
of living in the Thompson River Valley and is something we’d like to pass on to you through our beers. Enjoy!
Attendees will receive a beer glass and most importantly, learn about, and taste, more great beer! Email us at service@corkjoy.com to reserve space, or call 208-457-9885. To be made aware of future beer tasting events, join the email list at www.corkjoy.com |

Vertical Opportunities: Mercer Estates, Nicolas Cole
A few weeks ago we held an interesting wine tasting with Bud and Patsy Mercer from Mercer Estates. For those who wanted to come but couldn’t, I want to share the opportunity we learned about to start a very good Vertical at an affordable price starting at the very first vintage.
Do you collect Verticals? A “vertical” of wine is the same bottle from multiple vintages. For example, if you had a 1999, 2000, and 2001 vintage of the same winery Cabernet, you’d have a 3 year vertical. Mercer Estates is already making a big splash, and just on it’s first vintage! There is less than 1 case of 2005 Cabernet available, and we can also get 2006 Cabernet right now, and there are less than 5 cases of 2005 Merlot available, with no 2006 vintage, due to the wine maker not liking the results and dumping it all out! It’s a great time to start a Mercer Estates Cabernet and Merlot vertical.
- Mercer Estates Merlot – 91 Points
Ripe mature blueberry and cherry aromas with a nice oak spice are followed by forest floor, cedar and anise. In the supple mouth the same fruit flavors are complimented with chocolate and coffee bean followed by moderate tannins with good mouth feel and length. - David Forsyth, Winemaker
- Mercer Estates Cabernet Sauvignon – 90 Points (2005), 91 Points (2006)
Aromas of cherry, chocolate and herbal notes are accented by a hint of vanillin and oak spice. In the supple, rich mouth, flavors of coffee, cherry and cassis linger on the palate. This Cabernet is well balanced with a good structure, soft tannins and a long finish. - David Forsyth, Winemaker
[Member: $21.59 / Retail: $23.99 / Member Case: $20.39]
I like to collect verticals of some of my favorite wines, like Ornellia (Italian Super Tuscan), Boudreaux Cabernet (2003, 2004, 2005!), and now Mercer Estates Cabernet. On higher priced stuff I stash at least three bottles so I can open them over time, but spacing out the tastings. For Mercer Cabernet, it’s such a great wine at a great price that I feel comfortable stashing a case of each vintage. This way I can try a bottle every year for the next 12 years and see how it develops! I’ve already opened 2005 and 2006 together and compared them, so now I have 11 bottles waiting for the 2007 vintage so I can try 3 of them together. Now that’s a wine party! A couple of other great wines are available to start your vertical collection!
Nicholas Cole – A world class Washington winery that regularly earns scores in the 90′s for it’s strong, focused red blends. It’s the next door neighbor to Leonetti Cellars.

Camille 2003
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave this wine 90 points and said:The 2003 Camille is a product of a very hot vintage. Composed of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc, it is a dark ruby/purple-colored. It offers an attractive array of toast, fresh herbs, tobacco, black currants and blackberry. This is followed by an intensely flavored wine with light tannins and a supple texture. The wine is slightly compressed in the finish but there is enough structure for the wine to evolve and fill out over the next 3-5 years. It should drink well through 2030.
Wine Enthusiast awarded this wine 91 points, and Wine & Spirits gave it 93 points.
[Member: $49.49 / Retail: $54.99] -
Camille 2004
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave this wine 92 points and said:The 2004 Camille is a blend of 64% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose offers up toasty oak, some pleasant herbaceousness from the Cabernet Franc, as well as red and black currants and a hint of leather. On the palate there is excellent depth and concentration, broad spicy flavors, and a long, pure finish. The ripe tannins are nicely integrated and should allow from 5-7 years of further development. This classy effort should drink well through 2040.
Wine Enthusiast awarded this wine 92 points, and Wine Spectator gave it 90 points.
[Member: $49.49 / Retail: $54.99] - GraEagle Redwing 2005
Here’s what they say about the GraEagles:
Rich color and aromas of deep mocha, raspberry, black cherry and pipe tobacco fill the nose while dark red fruits layered with deep chocolate nuances, black licorice and balanced acidity embrace the palate. Velvety tanins and a lingering finish leaves no doubt that this elegant wine will benefit from additional time in the cellar and reward those who wait.
39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 15% Petit Verdot
[Member: $25.19 / Retail: $27.99] - GraEagle Redwing 2006
38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot, 6% Syrah, 3% Petite Verdot
[Member: $25.19 / Retail: $27.99]
Special Holiday Wines
The holiday season is getting started, don’t forget about these inexpensive but excellent festive party
wines.
Pasek Cellars Cranberry Wine is produced from whole Northwest Cranberries. A favorite during the holidays, this wine has become a staple among its loyal, enthusiastic fans throughout the year. Featuring an abundant cranberry flavor with a slightly sweet mid-palate that finishes out crisp and clean. This wine is a great match with pork, poultry, and spicy Asian foods. Serve Chilled.
[Member: $10.79 / Retail: $11.99]
Glühwein is a delicious blend of red wine and spices, and is the German name for mulled wine. The wine is infused with a unique blend of cinnamon, cloves, oranges, lemons and a dash of sugar.
Glühwein is ready to drink, you don’t need a recipe with this bottle, simply warm and serve. We usually fire up a crock pot as the weather cools down and keep it around to warm us up in the afternoon. You can also warm it on the stove. The combination of wine and spices ensures a warm and cheerful experience when shopping or out walking and is traditionally served with iced ginger biscuits.
Glühwein is the German name for this style of wine, but it’s also made in other countries.
In Romania and Poland this style of wine is known as vin fiert
In Scandanavia mulled wine is called glogg
In Moldova it is known as izvar
The French know this wine as vin chaud
In Hungary mulled wine is called forralt bar
The Italians know it as vin brulé
.. and in Slovenia kuhano vino

Historic Ales of Scotland Gift Pack
(1) 500ml bottles of Fraoch (made with Heather flowers)We know those descriptions sound a little…. well, strange. Maybe even nasty. Bog myrtle? Your beer smelt of elderberries! You’ve got to be kidding me. We’ve tasted all of these, and they’re far more “beerish” than the odd ingredients would indicate. That’s not to say they’re normal, they’re definitely all unique, but you have to give each beer a try.
(1) 500ml bottles of Alba (made with spruce and pine shoots)
(1) 500ml bottles of Ebulum (made with elderberries)
(1) 500ml bottles of Grozet (made with bog myrtle and ripe Scottish gooseberries)
As my father notes, you can’t judge a beer from the first sip. You need to finish a pint all the way to the bottom before you’ve really tried a beer. Often the uniqueness of a beer you haven’t had before is too much to handle, but by the bottom of the glass, it’s a familiar flavor to enjoy.
And as Mike Meyers notes: “If it’s not Scottish, it’s crap!”
