South American Wine Tasting This Weekend

Start the weekend out right at Enoteca - Fine Wine & Beer!

This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be hosting Debbie Keller of IWM as she shares a delicious selection of wine from South America. We want to give you the opportunity to “try before you buy” so we offer a flight of wine for a low cost. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 5 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up with a glass. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to beat the rush.

White Wine New Age White (San Rafael, Mendoza)
A vivacious and sensual wine, exhibiting aromas of fresh flowers and fruit, crisp, yet soft in the finish. The fruit is hand picked followed by crushing, cooling of crushed grapes, and pressing. Fermentation begins by inoculating with selected yeasts. Halfway through the fermentation process, the wine is centrifuged (spun) to halt fermentation, creating a slightly sweet, semi-sparkling wine.
50% Sauvignon Blanc 50% Malvasia
375ml [Member: $5.39 / Retail: $5.99]

Red Wine Cono Sur Visión Merlot 2005 (Colchagua Valley, Chile)

This merlot comes from Colchagua Valley, one of Chile’s most privileged origins. It’s a dark red wine of great intensity. Its nose presents black cherry aromas, with notes of pepper, coffee and sweet oak hints. Cono Sur Visión Merlot has a full mouth, concentrated, with ripe tannins and good structure. A velvety and elegant wine.
85% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 2% Syrah, 1% Aspiran Bouchet
[Member: $14.39 / Retail: $15.99]

Red Wine Cono Sur Carmenere 2007 (Colchagua Valley, Chile)
This wine’s deep, beautiful red-carmine color is typical of the variety it represents so well. This wine showcases a delicious, velvety quality and red fruit aromas that complement plum and blackberry notes. In the mouth there are also chocolate, spiced and smoky flavors. Smooth yet structured, balanced, long and undoubtedly flavorful.

This is a very meat-friendly wine: beef, lamb, pork and game. Its well-defined and spicy character is a good counterpart to ingredients that could be troublesome for other wines: tomatoes, eggplants, bell-peppers, onion and garlic. Vegetable soups, mushrooms and moussaka are also good alternatives and, if opting for cheeses, go for the yellow, medium-bodied type (gouda, cheddar, provolone).

85% Carmenere, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Syrah, 2% Aspiran Bouchet
[Member: $10.79 / Retail: $11.99]

Red Wine Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec 2005 (Mendoza, Argentina)
Intense red color with violet hints. The wine shows sweet aromas of blackberry and plum with a touch of black pepper, an elegant touch of smoke and vanilla comes from the oak aging. There is a velevety texture, soft tannins and long finish. Pair with venison, roasts, red meat, lamb, Hard cheeses, grilled meats, beef.
100% Malbec
[Member: $11.69 / Retail: $12.99]

Red Wine Bodega Noemia A Lisa (Rio Negro Valley, Patagonia, Argentina)
Nice raspberry fruit, with lush smoke and a lingering graphite edge to the finish. Fruit takes an encore on the finish. Perfect for red meat courses cooked any style.
90% Malbec, 10% Merlot
[Member: $22.49 / Retail: $24.99]

Around the World in 30 Days - August Wine Tastings

August has a great line up of wine tastings coming!

The first weekend of the month we tasted the August Wine Club wines, which include selections from the Northwest, South America, France, California, and Italy. Notable hits include the Guenoc Victorian Claret, and Etude Napa Merlot 2002.

Last Friday we hosted an expert on French wine, Lee Anderson of Chloe Imports, and he shared a selection of great French wines focusing on the stellar 2005 vintage. Three Pinot Noir’s were very well recieved, especially including the Capitan Gagnerot, and the Premier Cru from Domaine du Prieure.

Coming up, Friday, August 15th and Saturday August 16th, it’s off to the Spanish speaking world of South America as we try some Argentinian and Chilean wines with Debbie Keller.

Friday, August 22nd and Saturday August 23rd, we’ll continue the Spanish speaking theme, but this time with wines from Spain. Casa Ventura Imports brings some excellent flavors to the table and Laura Stiff from Casa Ventura will be here to share them.

Friday, August 29th and Saturday August 30th, Kevin Olsonberg from Odom will be on hand to share selections from the awesome Antinori portfolio, as we will be featuring Italian wines!

Don’t miss this whirlwind tour of wines of the world, save your Fridays or Saturdays in August for Wine Tasting!

Brews That Have Recently Been Spotted at Enoteca

Enoteca currently sports 900+ unique wines and 300+ unique beers on the shelf. New wine and beer is arriving every week, and unless we’ve seen you in the last few hours, there’s probably something new that you may want to know about. Therefore, we want to introduce you to a few new brews.

Beer Hair of the Dog Adam (Portland, Oregon)
It’s some sort of intense concotion of old ale / alt beer style, with a West Coast twist. When I opened up this little bottle I was suprised by how big and delicious this beer is. It’s so intense that it took me a few hours to sip the whole thing.
Here’s what the brewery has to say:
Adam is a recreation of a historic beerstyle. Originally made in Dortmunder, Germany, it was the first beer I produced when I opened Hair of the Dog. Rich in flavor, Adam is best served as a dessert beer. It is great with chocolate or cigars, or just a warm fire and good company. It has 10% alcohol by volume and 50 IBUs.

[Member: $5.39 / Retail: $5.99]

Beer Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws (Portland, Oregon)
Here’s what the brewery says:
Doggie Claws Doggie Claws is a Barley Wine made in the West Coast style. Big malt and hops make this copper colored ale one of our most popular products. Produced in September and October and released in November, this Beer will improve for years to come. Alcohol: 11.5% by volume. IBU’s 70

[Member: $5.39 / Retail: $5.99]

Beer Hair of the Dog Fred (Portland, Oregon)
This is one delicious and intense brew.
Here’s what the brewery says:
Fred was created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt. Fred is a big inspiration for me and many other brewers. Fred’s work in all-grain brewing and beer styles helped me become a better brewer. Fred the beer is a deep golden color. It is made with aromatic and rye malts and includes 10 different hop varieties in an effort to incorporate the whole world into this beer. It has 10% alcohol by volume and 65 IBUs. We hope that Fred will inspire you to share your knowledge with others as Fred has with us.

What’s Open To Taste at Enoteca This Week?

Did you know that any time Enoteca is open, we have something open to taste? That’s right, 11-7 Tuesday-Saturday, you can come in, and as long as you are 21 or older, you can enjoy a complimentary taste of wine or beer. The selection changes all the time, but here’s what we’re planning on featuring this week.

White Wine Bonny Doon Le Cigar Blanc 2006 (Central Coast, California)
This is a very unique opportunity to taste a White Chateauneuf du Pape style of wine that is a little bit different. Usually Roussanne dominates a blend like this, however in 2006, most of the California Roussanne was botrytised, which is a fungus that renders sweet, so the winemakers leaned on the Grenache Blanc component. This wine is a study in pome fruit, Asian pear and quince, monst notably, with suggestions of honeydew, lime blossom, and lilac. The botrytised fruit adds a honeyed, apricot/peach note.

As a U.S. version of a White Chateauneuf du Pape, it also goes well with the recipe in this newsletter a while back, found here: Shrimp, Scallops, White Chateauneuf Du Pape
75.3% Grenache Blanc, 24.7% Roussanne

Remember the Orphans

Orphan Annie Even more orphans have been piled on! The orphan shelf has a lot of great values for Club members. Several bottles of wine were discovered that have been waiting for a home, and some beer has even migrated to the orphan shelf. Club members receive a 20% discount whenever they adopt an orphan. Find it in your heart. Don’t let them continue in such crowded conditions.

A wide range of very delicious bottles are currently up for adoption. Come peer into the glassed-over eyeballs of these little fellas and see if one of them doesn’t tug at your heart. Pleeeze sir, can I have some more?
