June Wine & Beer Club is in!

The wine and beer for this month’s club has arrived and will be in your bin on Friday, June 6th! Come taste wine club wines to kick off Post Falls Days! If you’re not a Club Member yet, learn about the Wine & Beer Club?

Wine & Beer Club is rolling out this Friday, and tasting is from 4-7 Friday night. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines), $5 per glass (5 oz. of one wine), and $10 for the Anniversary Club Red, glass pour only.

The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine Forte Canto Salice Salentino 2006 (Puglia, Italy)
Made by brothers Marcello and Massimiliano Apollonio in Puglia, the heel of the boot of Italy, this winery name is translated “Strong Hand.” The grape is Negroamaro, often mistranslated as “black and bitter”, this name actually goes back etymologically to the word for “black” in both old Latin (neuro) and ancient Greek (maru). So, Negroamaro actually means “blackest of the blacks”. One peek at this dramatic fruit, with its darkly-hued skin to ward off the southern heat, and its equally inky flesh, and it’s not hard to imagine how this grape earned its reputation.

Plush, moody fruits and deep-seeded earth tones weave their way tightly into the bold tannic structure. Cab and Syrah drinkers are bound to be amazed! Freesia, delicate wild violets and pink rose petal offer the first impression on the nose, followed by black plum, boysenberry and subtle earthy notes of grill char and leather. The palate reveals the precisely balanced, sun-kissed fruit of marionberry and blackberry that eventually turns to black currant preserves spiced with clove. Add to this layers of smoke, red clay and wet asphalt.

Pair with proscuitto, oil-cured olives, beef shishkabob, Ahi tuna and swordfish steaks.

100% Negroamaro

White Wine Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio 2006 (Tuscany, Italy)
San Angelo Pinot Grigio is an elegant wine of pale-straw color, with an intense, fruity aroma, followed by a clean, rich, refreshing taste. These characteristics distinguish the unique and aristocratic San Angelo Pinot Grigio from its northern counterparts.

San Angelo Pinot Grigio is a delightful complement to light fare, seafood and simple veal and poultry dishes. Above all, it is a superb aperitif.

100% Pinot Grigio

Reserve Club

Red Wine Novelty Hill Merlot 2005 (Columbia Valley, Washington)
“Deep, rich black cherry, raspberry and mocha aromas and flavors linger beautifully across a long, focused finish. Refined, well-integrated tannins add to the wine’s polish and grace.”
Mike Januik, Winemaker

92% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot

White Wine Vin du Lac “Lehm” Dry Riesling 2006 (Michaela’s Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Washington)
Nicknamed for Larry Lehmbecker, owner of Vin du Lac and winemaker. This wine is blazingly tart. Stunningly intense. So dry you’ll be tempted to serve it in Martini glasses. This wine from Vin du Lac is the result of Larry’s obsession to craft a truly dry Riesling that honors the heritage of this noblest of grapes, & also reflects the “earth” from which it was grown. Here he seeks & achieves a Riesling that is unique in style, certainly unlike anything else being crafted in Washington. The northern vineyard site from which this wine was sourced ripens the late-maturing Riesling slowly, with incredible acid retention, yielding a wine of tart crispness & intense fruit.

100% Riesling

Premier Club

Red Wine Fidelitas Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Columbia Valley, Washington)
Strikingly balanced with rich vanilla, cassis and dark cocoa, its inviting character leaves you with a lingering, graceful finish. Vineyard sources are: Conner-Lee Vineyard (34%), Lady Hawk Vineyard (32%), Stillwater Creek (22%), Gamache (6%), and Boushey (6%)

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Petite Verdot

White Wine Stag’s Leap Viognier 2006 (Napa Valley, California)
An elegant expression of Viognier, this wine’s rich and distinctive style has grown out of Stag’s Leap’s long and well-regarded history with Rhône varietals. Originally created as a Porch Wine for family and friends of the winery in order to tell part of the story of the Rhône-style field blend made from heritage vines on the property, Viognier began to be made in its own right in 1998. The wine has bold yet elegant acidity with balance and finesse on the palate and the signature fruit and floral aromatics that speak of a well made Viognier.

Light straw in color, this wine offers aromas of honeydew melon, citrus and floral notes on the nose as the crisp entry introduces flavors of white peach, honeysuckle and slight grapefruit. Vibrant acidity leads to a full mouthfeel featuring kiwi and key lime notes that transition to a long finish featuring fruit to the end.

100% Viognier

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Beau Vigne Juliet Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Stag’s Leap Ridge, Napa Valley, California)
The Winemaker for this great Cabernet Sauvignon is Dave Phinney. That should be enough right there. Phinney is the winemaker we all know and love in the bottle of The Prisoner, and the Orin Swift Mercury Head Cabernet Sauvignon who honed his skills at Whitehall Lane and Opus One. While Phinney makes the wine, the owners are Ed and Trish Snider, who live in Hayden Lake with their daughter and three sons. Ed prefers the pace of north Idaho and visits Napa when necessary for the business. Here’s what Dave Phinney has to say:
Beau Vigne’s Juliet is soft and a delicate balance of the three vines. Our reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, bold with tobacco leaf, cocoa and black cherry. Merlot, rich fruit flavors of cherry blackberry and plum. Petit Verdot, spicy, velvety and smooth. Juliet “Oh Where Art Thou?”
Juliet is featured by the glass at famous restaurants such as Emeril’s, Smith & Wollenskies, Marriott Properties, Arterra del Mar, and more.

We recommend serving with a thick red juicy steak. Or if you’re a vegatarian, serve with a big thick red juicy tofu-steak. But seriously, a grilled vegetable or eggplant lasagna would do well.

96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec

Beer Club

Beer Club members receive 3 bottles of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase.

Fine Beer Grand Teton XX Sweetgrass Double IPA (Victor, Idaho)
Sweetgrass is a region north of Yellowstone National Park. To commemorate their twenty-year history, the brewers of Grand Teton have chosento update and enhance a few of their great beers. XX Sweetgrass is the first release in our 2008 XX series. The original Grand Teton Sweetgrass India Pale Ale is brewed solidly in the American IPA style; crisp and fragrant with a generous yet smooth hop character. XX Sweetgrass is all that twice over, with double the malt and double the hops – an astonishing three pounds per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of “dry-hops” added after fermentation.

The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold, flavorful food. Try it with prime rib, Indian food, Cajun blackened pork or chicken, Thai or Vietnamese cuisine.

7.5% ABV, 1 Liter Wax Capped Bottle

Fine Beer Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Fresh Hop (Chico, California)
This is the first time we know of that an American brewer has put out a beer with fresh-picked hops from the southern hemisphere. Features fresh Pacific Hallertau, New Zealand Motueka and New Zealand Southern Cross hops, all from New Zealand.

Like Celebration Ale, the fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, Sierra Nevada went to the added expense of flying these hops from New Zealand to Chico so they could brew with them the week after they were picked.

Delicious and hoppy beer, with floral and citrus aromas, fresh-hop spiciness, and more.

Ingredients: Pale & Caramel malts, Ale Yeast, Pacific Halertau bittering hops, New Zealand Motueka & New Zealand Southern Cross finishing hops, water.

6.7% ABV, 66 IBUs, 24 oz. Bottle

Fine Beer Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine 2008 (Chico, California)
This year marks the 25th release of Bigfoot. This award-winning barleywine boasts a dense, fruity bouquet, an intense flavor palate and a deep reddish-brown color. Its big maltiness is superbly balanced by a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.
…Bigfoot captures the imagination, and its character is as big as the name implies, with a huge hoppiness in its earthy aroma, a chewy palate, and a great depth of flavor.
– Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson’s Beer Companion

Ingredients: Two-row Pale & English Caramel malts, Ale Yeast, Chinook bittering hops, Cascade & Centennial finishing hops, Cascade, Centennial & Chinook dry hopping, water.

9.6% ABV, 90 IBUs, 12 oz. Bottle
