Special Thursday Tasting Event: Desert Wind Winery with Carlos Trevino

This Thursday, May 15th, from 6-8 pm Enoteca will be hosting Carlos Trevino from the Desert Wind Winery as he shares an excellent selection of Desert Wind Wines, including the award winning Ruah. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 5 wines) for $10 per flight.

Desert Wind Ruah

White Wine Desert Wind Semillion 2006 (Waluke Slope, Washington)
Lemongrass and stone fruits mingle with toasted oak and apples on the palate. The Desert Wind wines are designed to showcase the beautiful fruit grown in this vineyard. The fruit’s distinctive quality is derived from the unique soil and climate of the Wahluke Slope and rigorous vineyard management. Winemaker Greg Fries works to maintain the distinctive qualities of the fruit as it becomes wine. Vibrant fruit character is enhanced with a touch of oak. The heat and light ripen the Semillon fruit into a rich and aromatic wine. Lemongrass and stone fruits mingle with toasted oak and apples on the palate. This wine is an ideal match with shellfish–scallops are the ultimate pairing.
100% Semillion
[Member: $13.49 / Retail: $14.99]

White Wine Desert Wind ‘Bare Naked’ Chardonnay 2005 (Waluke Slope, Washington)
A delightful example of what this grape can do when left unadorned. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, no oak to mask its luscious fruit character.
100% Chardonnay
[Member: $13.49 / Retail: $14.99]

Red Wine Desert Wind Merlot 2004 (Waluke Slope, Washington)
Intense, late summer fruit flavors are a hallmark of the Desert Wind Merlot. The wine is big bodied and wine maker, Greg Fries, uses oak and patience to bind these qualities into a well joined and supple wine.
99.7% Merlot, 0.3% Cabernet Sauvignon
[Member: $13.49 / Retail: $14.99]

Red Wine Desert Wind Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Waluke Slope, Washington)
Winemaker Greg Fries works with the goal of producing a wine that shows distinct varietal character. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the Desert Wine vineyard tends to be luxurious in both texture and fruit. This wine has been balanced through oak barrel aging and has firmness from the oak tannins which allow the wine to drink well throughout its life span.
94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot
[Member: $13.49 / Retail: $14.99]

Red Wine Desert Wind Ruah 2005 (Waluke Slope, Washington)

Syrah/Shiraz, What’s Up With That? Wine Tasting

Start the weekend out right at Enoteca - Fine Wine & Beer!

This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be sharing a selection of Syrah and Shiraz wines, and a white blend as well. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 4 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up for $10 per 5 oz. glass.

Want to know about Syrah and Shiraz? This is excerpted from a Wikipedia article here. Syrah has a long documented history in the Rhône region of Southeastern France, but before 1998 it was not known with certainty if it had originated in that region or was brought there, when it was concluded that Syrah was the offspring of the grape varieties Dureza (father) and Mondeuse Blanche (mother). The grape is called Syrah in Europe, Argentina, Chile, and most of the United States. The Iranian city of Shiraz has been linked to the Syrah grape, but genetic testing and a thorough vetting of history has disproven this link.

The synonym Shiraz became popular for this grape variety in Australia, where it has long been established as the most grown dark-skinned variety. In Australia it was also commonly called Hermitage up to the late 1980s, but since that name is also a French Protected designation of origin, this naming practice caused problem on some export markets and was dropped. The name Shiraz for this grape variety is also commonly used in South Africa, Canada, and New Zealand.

Syrah should not be confused with Petite Sirah, a synonym for Durif, another grape variety which is a hybrid of Syrah with Peloursin dating from 1880.

White Wine Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc 2005 (Paso Robles, California)
We are including the Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc because it is a white wine blend based on the French Rhône style of wine known as White Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is made in the same area as Syrah.

The 2005 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc is a vibrant expression of the terroir of Tablas Creek. It shows aromas of honeysuckle, mint, lemon peel and spice, with rich Roussanne flavors of honey, rose petals, pear, petrol and white flowers, excellent breadth, cleansing acidity and great length. It should drink well when young but will also reward time in bottle; we expect it to show beautifully for at least the next 5-7 years.
93 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
70% Roussanne, 25% Grenache Blanc, 5% Picpoul Blanc
[Member: $36.99 / Retail: $39.99]

Red Wine Rosemount McLaren Vale Shiraz 2004 (McLaren Vale, Australia)
Grown from rare mature vines in McLaren Vale, this full-bodied Shiraz displays ripe plummy fruit flavors. This elegant wine is in perfect balance. A finely integrated structure indicates the long-term cellaring potential.
[Member: $22.49 / Retail: $24.99]

Red Wine Coeur d’ Alene Cellars Syrah 2003 (Columbia Valley, Washington)
With a powerful and complex bouquet, this bold Syrah melds ripe cherry/berry fruit with spicy bittersweet chocolate and a trace of truffle. Barrel aging lends a smooth mouth feel and a bold, smoky finish. Good structure and firm tannins promise great aging potential. This vintage is sold out at the winery. 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast, June 2006
[Member: $25.19 / Retail: $27.99]

Red Wine The Gatekeeper 2001 (McLaren Vale, Australia)
This is a very special wine in that it has been aged to perfection and is perfectly lush to enjoy now. Deep red with an edge of youthful purple. Mulberry and ripe strawberry aromas with integrated vanilla oak and hints of truffle, violet and clove. Luscious, sweet strawberry and black cherry flavors with balanced acidity and oak. Soft and rich with generous fruit on the finish.
[Member: $29.69 / Retail: $32.99]

Through the Grapevine
An Illustrated Guide to Wine Grapes
by Candace Ann Frasher

Earlier this year we had the wonderful experience of meeting Candace Frasher, the author of an excellent beginners style book about wine. This handsome paperback is illustrated with artistic watercolors and speaks about the primary grapes used for making wine. Included are pronounciations, illustrations, food pairing ideas, tasting note space, and grape “personalities” that make for a fun introduction to wine.

The copies at Enoteca are signed by the author, Candace, who is a fun and caring person who just wants to spread the joy of wine. These make an excellent gift for someone new to enjoying fine wine, perhaps even your mother for Mother’s Day.

Price: $12.99 each.

Club members can have tickets simply added to their Bin, and anyone can pick one up by coming into Enoteca in Post Falls, calling us at 208-457-9885 or sending us email at service@corkjoy.com .
