Wine & Beer Club is rolling out this Friday, and tasting is from 4-7 Friday night. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines), $5 per glass (5 oz. of one wine), and $10 for the Anniversary Club Red, glass pour only.

The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine Spann Vineyards Becky’s Backacher Mayacamas Range Red N/V (California)
The winemakers made a small amount of this blend from the back acre of their property to give to friends who got a backache from working harvest. This serious, fun-loving, drink-me-now wine is great by itself but also with barbeque, pizza or other richly flavored foods.

This Backacher is dark red/black in color, has a lush nose of black licorice, red cherries and plums and a taste that follows; juicy red cherries and black licorice. Yum!

36% Merlot, 28% Carignan, 18% Syrah, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon & 7% Petite Sirah

White Wine Spann Vineyards Becky’s Backacher Bottle Blonde 2006 (North Coast, California)
You: Seeking pleasure…..Wanting to try something new and provocative.

Me: Waiting for that special someone to share my qualities with……Perfectly proportioned, easy on the palate…..Ready for a walk on the beach or a candlelight dinner…..With this blond you’ll have more fun.

The intriguing aroma is of crisp apples and anise. The taste is rich and creamy with no one varietal dominating. Chardonnay gives this wine it’s crisp, refreshing taste and long finish while Semillon adds the creamy texture and rich mouth-feel and Viognier adds a hint of ripe apricot to the overall impression. This wine is great by itself and a good match for lighter seafood or fowl dishes.

67% Chardonnay, 22% Semillon, 11% Viognier

Reserve Club

Red Wine Benziger Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 (Sonoma, California)
This wine is full-bodied and round with well integrated tannins for a smooth finish. The initial aroma contains dark berry fruit with a hint of earthiness. In the mouth the wine is intensely flavored with components of cherry, cedar, tobacco, toast, herbs, and blackberry. Enjoy this wine with grilled meats, beef stew, and decadently chocolate desserts.

Grape lots from three of the Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec – were blended from several benchland and mountain ranches that naturally yield smaller crops and result in intensely colored and flavored wine.

This wine was made with grapes grown by sustainable farming methods.

White Wine St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (Napa Valley, California)
The 2006 Sauvignon Blanc is another hit in a long history of fabulous white wines from St. Supéry. There is plenty of elegant lime juice, honeysuckle and fresh pineapple in the aroma. On the palate flavors of ruby grapefruit, lime and straw fill out the mouth. This wine is refreshing, lively and persistent.

100% Sauvignon Blanc

Premier Club

Red Wine Alexandria Nicole Destiny Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (Horse Heaven Hills, Washington)
Carefully selected, blended and barrel aged for 22 months this estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the Destiny Ridge Estate Vineyard is loaded with dark berry flavors, hints of chocolate, rose petals, spice, pencil lead, dried herbs, tobacco, and toasty oak nuances. Its bold structure is balanced throughout with refined, yet powerful tannins that are backed by well integrated oak, pure complexity, and a lengthy finish.

91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Cabernet Franc

White Wine Huia Pinot Gris 2006 (New Zealand)
The 2006 Pinot Gris was grown on the Anderson’s vineyard in the upper Brancott Valley and Huia Winsome Block on the clay run off from the Wither Hills. On the Anderson Vineyard the soils are north facing, gently sloping, free draining clay loam with a few stones. Both blocks have a variety of old (Mission or Petit Grain) and more recently imported cultivars.

The grapes were hand-picked for optimum flavour. Once at the winery the grapes were crushed, pressed and then settled overnight. Around fifty percent of the juice underwent a natural ferment and the remaining juice being inoculated with re-hydrated wine yeast. Once the initial heat of the ferment had dissipated, forty percent of the still gently fermenting Pinot Gris was moved into French oak to complete ferment and so the lees could be stirred. Then the wine was blended and prepared for bottling.

The nose reveals intense ripe pear character, white peach and rich exotic spices. Lovely soft texture with layers of white fruit, nuts and spices. This wine shows an excellent palate length and structure.

Huia Pinot Gris is delicious with: seafood risotto, roasted and casseroled game, Thai food, grilled salmon and fresh water trout, seared game fish, rare beef salad, light blue cheese and walnut tart.

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Washington State)
Winemaker Rob Newsom’s notes:
Ten vineyards and seven grape varietals combine with several forests of oak to deliver this complex, old-world style wine. I set out to make something interesting with subtle layers of intriguing flavors. The cab was gorgeous, the merlot full and smooth, the cab franc aromatic, the malbec grainy, the petite verdot tannic and dark, the sangio spicy, the syrah earthy and good old stinky. We stored the wines separately in the cellars for 26 months in French, Hungarian, Russian, Minnesota, and Appalachian oaks. Some of the Minnesota barrels were toasted using chunks of sweet, smoky hickory from Louisiana. The barrels were blended in big French oak tanks for several months of flavor assimilation.

This wine is young and should develop into a complicated beauty.

The wine is smooth, deep, layers of ripe caramelized fruit from probably the best Washington vintage ever, from ten great vineyards, in six appellations.
The 2004 received 91 points from Robert Parker. We still have a couple magnums of that vintage available.

Varieties: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Cab Franc, 3% Malbec, 3% Petite Verdot, 2% Syrah, 2% Sangiovese

Vineyards: Bacchus 18%, Champoux 3%, Katherine Leone 3%, Klipsun 4%, Loess 9%, Pepper Bridge 18%, Seven Hills 18%, Snipes Canyon 3%, Wallula 18%, Weinbeau 3%

Fine Beer Hale’s Ales Troll Porter (Seattle, Washington)
When you set out to make a beer that’s gonna keep a troll happy, it better have a lot to chew on. This one does. Troll Porter pushes the porter category to a new edge–big, complex, quite black with herbal hop influences– enough to keep that grouchy old troll off your back, at least for a while…

Ingredients: Pale malted barley, Carastan, Caramel, Chocolate, Black and Special Roast Malts, Nugget and Mount Hood hops, Hale’s special yeast and filtered water.

6.9% ABV, Original Gravity: 1.068

Fine Beer Hale’s Ales Mongoose IPA (Seattle, Washington)
Right from it’s introduction in the summer of 2002, Hale’s Mongoose IPA has been enthusiastically received by hop-head fans throughout the Northwest. Nearly 50 pounds of hops are used in making this flavorful beer, including an abundance of Amarillo leaf hops. The end result is an IPA with a wonderful aromatic hop bouquet, a pleasant hop bitterness with citrus overtones and a deliciously round and lingering aftertaste.

Ingredients: Pale malted barley, Crystal malts, Centennial and Nugget hops, Hale’s special yeast and filtered water.

6.2% ABV, Original Gravity 1.060

Fine Beer Hale’s Ales Red Menace Big Amber (Seattle, Washington)
“Red Menace Big Amber” is out to revolutionize the world of Amber ales–this one’s big (like the name says!), full flavored and hoppy. Taste one and you’ll want to join the party.

Ingredients:Pale malted barley, Caramel and Carastan malts, a handful of Black Malt, and 100% Centennial hops, Hale’s special yeast and filtered water.

Original Gravity: 1.056

Fine Beer Hale’s Ales Pikop Andropov’s Rushin’ Imperial Stout (Seattle, Washington)
Big and bold, this black beauty has all the “stuff” to earn the title “Imperial”. Six different types of malt, a complex hop profile, and 7.5% ABV. This beer is an inky black, impressive beer that pours a dark brown head. Roasty flavors of mocha, spice, and more will come through.

7.5% ABV

Fine Beer Full Sail Old Boardhead Barleywine (Hood River, Oregon)
This smooth and fruity Barleywine ale is a delicious brew to sip for it’s depth and delicacy of flavor. The aroma is citrus and hoppy, with some caramel maltiness. Deep and robust, it is brewed using two-row Pale, Dextrin and Crystal malts, combined with flaked barley, to give it a strong malty body. Hopped with Willamette, Styrian, Goldings and Centennial hops, Old Boardhead Barleywine finishes with a pleasant hoppiness.

Like all Barleywine’s, this beer can be aged for up to a few years to allow the flavors to integrate and mellow in the bottle. Store in a cool dark place that doesn’t experience temperature fluxuations. Try an experiment with several bottles aged and tasted every 3-6 months!

9% ABV, 91 IBU’s
