Sobon Estates Winery Tasting
Start the weekend out right at Enoteca – Fine Wine & Beer!
This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be hosting Debbie Keller as she shares a selection of Sobon Estates wines. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 4 wines, 1 oz. of port) for $10 per flight, and follow up for $5 per 5 oz. glass (or 3 oz. of port).
All of the Sobon and Shenandoah wines are made with 100% Organically Grown Grapes. To learn more about Sobon’s Organic wine, read this information from the Sobon family as to why they have made this choice.
At Enoteca we carry a selection of Organic wine with ultra-low sulfite levels. The Organic wines we carry still need to taste good, so we’re just as picky about the Organic wines on the shelf as we are about the ones without that label. In 1989, our family made the decision to start farming organically. After a winter of much research, the following spring was the start of our new endeavor. We have never stopped learning. In 1994, we registered with the County Agriculture Commissioner and the State of California as Organic Growers of grapes and walnuts. We now farm 125 acres without herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. During 2002, we received the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) Certification.
Our wines, both at Shenandoah Vineyards and Sobon Estate, are made by conventional means using a minimum of sulfites to preserve freshness and color. At bottling, our wine contains between 15-20 parts per million free sulfites, which diminish after several months in the bottle. (for informational purposes, wines with no added sulfites can contain 8-12 parts per million of sulfites, a natural product of fermentation). We believe the small amounts of sulfites we use are necessary to maintain the freshness, stability, ageability, and enjoyment of our wines.
Composting is a vital way to nourish the soil. We use 600 to 800 tons of compost every year. We make our own and purchase some. It is all made from grape skins, seeds, and stems … the perfect balance of nutrients to return to the soil.
Shenandoah Vineyards is the first wine property developed by Shirley and Leon Sobon in 1977. Later, in 1989 they bought each other a second winery for their 30th wedding anniversary present, hence Sobon Estates was born. This Sauvignon Blanc represents their original winery, and the rest of the wines are from the “new” property. Crisp and fruity, a perfect match for seafood and fowl dishes. The aromas are a captivating blend of floral and spicy tones with a hint of tropical fruit and toasted coconut. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
91% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Orange Muscat, 4% Semillon
[Member: $9.89 / Retail: $10.99]
From Sobon’s own organically farmed vines planted in 1980. The fully mature vines produced a smaller than normal crop of excellent fruit this vintage, resulting in a wine with much richness and depth. The Cabernet Franc has contributed to the marvelous aroma and has balanced the rich flavors of the Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine will peak in about five years and hold for five to ten years after that. This wine best compliments beef or veal with full flavored sauces. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc (All Estate Vineyard)
[Member: $15.29 / Retail: $16.99]
This is a fragrant, rich, full bodied zin with very forward, fruit driven flavors. It is meant for everyday drinking, but will improve with up to five years of bottle age. It is a blend of several of our old zinfandel vineyards. An excellent match for grilled meats & pasta dishes. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
100% Estate – 90% Zinfandel, 6% Barbera, 2% Syrah, 2% Sangiovese
[Member: $15.29 / Retail: $16.99]
Named for the visiting mountain lion whose tracks are often seen in the vineyard. This is a very stylish and likable wine. It has forward aromas of licorice and mint chocolate. The flavors are rich, full, and reminiscent of ripe, dusty blackberries and cranberry juice. The finish is crisp and lingering. This wine has a distinct “peppery” component. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
95% Estate Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah
[Member: $15.29 / Retail: $16.99]
A delicious port-style wine which captures the flair of the Zinfandel grape. Sweet, rich and fruity, with a long lingering aftertaste that will appeal to both the novice and the discriminating port drinker. Best served after coffee, with fruit, nuts and cheese. Made with Organically Grown Grapes
100% Zinfandel, 9.8% Residual Sugar, 18% ABV
375ml [Member: $15.29 / Retail: $16.99]
