Milbrandt Winery Tasting

Start the weekend out right at Enoteca - Fine Wine & Beer!

This Friday from 4-7 Enoteca will be hosting Dustin Lewis from Eagle as he shares a selection of Milbrandt Winery wines. We will be tasting Saturday from 12-7 as well, which is a great time to taste wine to beat the rush. Taste a flight (2 oz. each of 5 wines) for $10 per flight, and follow up for $5 per 5 oz. glass.

White Wine Milbrandt Traditions Riesling 2006 (Columbia Valley, Washington)
Riesling has been Germany’s signature grape variety since before the Renaissance. It produces a wide range of styles and has a remarkable ability to showcase the intricacies of individual soils and climates. Whether sweet or dry, the grape’s natural racy acidity keeps it lively and balanced when young and incredibly sound and complex when old. Over the last two decades, Washington has earned praise for its intense and structured Rieslings.
This 2006 Traditions Riesling is a great example of terroir and variety. The textbook floral aromas of orange blossom, apricot and white peaches are well supported by the firm acids and hallmark “Evergreen minerality.” The palate is lush, but lively; the finish is long and silky. The grapes come from Evergreen Vineyard (70%) and Preston Vineyard (30%). 90 Points Wine Enthusiast
100% Riesling

White Wine Milbrandt Evergreen Chardonnay 2006 (Evergreen Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Washington State)
Chardonnay is the most widely variety in the United States. It’s also number one in acreage in Washington State, barely edging out Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. While many New World renditions are fat, rich, buttery and unctuous, Washington State Chardonnays tend to be crisp, structured, steely and refreshing. For added complexity, this 2006 Evergreen Chardonnay was barrel fermented in four different types of oak. Extended lees contact added to the wine’s rich mouthfeel and creaminess. Underneath the well-tempered opulence is the hallmark brisk acidity and minerality found in all of Milbrandt’s wines. The aromas are bright and tropical; the finish is clean and harmonious. 90 Points Wine Enthusiast
100% Chardonnay
[Member: $20.69 / Retail: $22.99]

Red Wine Milbrandt Traditions Merlot 2005 (Wahluke Slope, Washington)
Merlot came to us from Bordeaux where it serves as a major component in the Medoc and the dominate grape in Pomerol. Over the past two decades Eastern Washington has carved out a serious reputation for Merlot. Washington’s large diurnal temperature swings (often 40 degrees or more), lack of rain (6-8 inches per year) and porous, low-vigor soils allow us to produce lusciously rich and distinctive Merlots.

This 2005 Traditions is a velvety, polished wine with astonishing length and intensity. The nose offers a wide array of aromatics including cherry, blackberry, vanilla and spice. The texture is ripe and lush with well-integrated tannins. A small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera bring a complementary depth, structure and bouquet to the wine. 89 Points Wine Enthusiast
84% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Barbera
[Member: $14.39 / Retail: $15.99]

Red Wine Milbrandt Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Wahluke Slope, Washington)
Cabernet Sauvignon is the undisputed king of grapes. It produces wines of extraordinary concentration, style, class and longevity. Its homeland is Bordeaux where it serves as the primary component in most of the classified growths. Today, Cabernet is the most widely planted red variety in Washington State, yielding wines that are dense, lush and opulent. The Wahluke Slope is Washington’s warmest growing region. It produces wines with great concentration and texture. This 2005 Legacy Cabernet is deeply colored and blessed with aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, currant, sweet chocolate, allspice and toasty oak. The flavors are rich, bold, balanced and layered with cassis, sweet oak and spice. The finish is long and supported by finely polished tannins. 90 Points Wine Enthusiast
95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot
[Member: $23.39 / Retail: $25.99]

Red Wine Milbrandt Legacy Syrah 2005 (Wahluke Slope, Washington)
Syrah travels well. Setting out from its home in France’s Northern Rhone Valley, this versatile variety has established new roots in Australia, California, South Africa, Chile, Argentina and Washington State, where it is now the third most planted red variety. It could be the wind; it could be the arid climate; it could be the complex, low vigor soils of these vineyards. Whatever the reason, Syrah seems to produce wines of great character and depth when planted along Eastern Washington’s Wahluke Slope. This 2005 Legacy Syrah is dense, rich, juicy and unabashedly varietal. The wine is large-framed with ripe fruit and relatively soft tannins. The aromas are dominated by lavender, boysenberry, tobacco, blackberries, leather, coffee, vanilla and white pepper. The texture exhibits a broad lushness that is nicely supported by fine natural acidity and soft tannins. 91 Points Wine Enthusiast
96.4% Syrah, 3.6% Mouvedre

Keeping it Sweet - Quady Dessert Wine Tasting - April 16th

Andy Quady, blessed with a wicked sense of humor, founded his winery in Madera, in the central San Joaquin Valley, to make classic dessert wines. Included in his portfolio are splendid Muscat-based wines and port-style wines. But because it’s not legal to call the latter by the name of the similar wine from Portugal [Port], Quady renamed his Starboard. His Muscat wines include a delightful Orange Muscat called Essensia, a black Muscat called Elysium, and a low-alcohol Orange Muscat, called Electra.

For the newest wine, Deviation, pictured, Quady said he thought it would be fun to make a “love potion” dessert wine, “so we infused Damiana and Scented Geranium into our Essensia Orange Muscat dessert wine.” The damiana is a plant with a pleasant herbal character “reputed to have aphrodisiac properties,” though the wine isn’t advertised as an actual love potion. Quady added that scented geranium “is said to be used in witchcraft where practitioners supposedly employ its hauntingly seductive aroma in love potions.”

Dustin Lewis will be on hand to share these unique sweet dessert wines. They make good cocktails, and blending is encouraged.

The event will start at 6 p.m. and will feature a handful of Quady’s excellent sweet dessert wine.
