October Wine & Beer Club is in!

The wine and beer for this month’s club has arrived and will be in your bin on Friday, October 5th! If you’re not a Club Member yet, learn about the Wine & Beer Club? This weekend is Taste of Club! Tasting is from 4-8 Friday night, Saturday from 12-8. The cost is $10 per flight (3 oz. each of 3 wines), $5 per glass (5 oz. of one wine), and $10 for the Anniversary Club Red, glass pour only. The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

Red Wine Desert Wind Ruah 2005 (Wahluke Slope, Columbia Valley, Washington) - Crafted from fruit grown in the Columbia Valley of Washington, the Desert Wind Ruah is an affirmation of eastern Washington’s viticultural prowess. This full bodied, Bordeaux-inspired blend is enveloped in a lush core of concentrated blackberry fruit with a hint of anise on the palate. The wine has hints of toasted oak and almond spice, as well as a rich garnet color, which is complemented by soft, velvety tannins and a lingering finish. Enjoy the Ruah alone or with grilled meats, tomato based entrees, and soft cheeses. Drink now through 2011. 44% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc White Wine Christine Andrew Viognier 2005 (Lodi, California) - This classic yet refined Viognier has a tropical bouquet of white peaches with a hint of honeysuckle. Its intriguing aroma gives way to rich mango with subtle notes of lychee fruit. This refreshing white lingers on the palate with its long, full finish. The crisp fruitiness and acidity in this wine make it a delightful aperitif with an avocado and grapefruit salad, crab cakes or prosciutto-wrapped melon. In addition, Viognier has more body than most white wines and is an excellent companion to most shellfish and seafood dishes or grilled lemon rosemary chicken. 90% Viognier, 10% Chardonnay

Reserve Club

Red Wine J. Bookwalter Lot 21 Red N/V (Columbia Valley, Washington) - The lot number indicates in sequential order how many multi-vintage blends Bookwalter Winery has produced since 1983. For those that follow Bookwalter’s Lot wines in cult-like fashion, Lot 21 is one of the best blends produced and will deliver immediate satisfaction. Largely from the outstanding 2005 vintage, the wine offers aromas black olive, plum, bing cherries and vanilla. The entry on the palate is sweet, almost caramel like, transitions seamlessly into a voluminous mid-palate and finishes with flavors of all spice, black berries and cherries followed by silky, lush tannins. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 11% Syrah, 4% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc White Wine Austin Hope Winery Westside White Rhone Blend 2005 (Central Coast, California) - The 2005 Westside White is true to its Roussanne component with a golden, straw-like color. The wine is full-bodied with apricot and honey overtones and a rich, round mouthfeel. Stone fruit aromas, a clean minerality and lime citrus notes make this wine a perfect partner to a wide variety of cuisines. Recommended to be served well chilled and paired with grilled seafood, cream-based sauces and spicy Asian fare. 50% Viognier, 35% Roussane, 15% Grenache Blanc

Premier Club

Red Wine Rombauer Zinfandel 2005 (Napa Valley, California) - Rombauer Vineyards’ 2005 Zinfandel represents the very essence of California Zinfandel. Full bodied, fruit forward, and juicy, this wine boasts bright aromas of black cherry and plum, with a light spicy character all its own. Layers of cranberries, plums, and dark berries flow together for a rich, full flavor with a sensational mouth feel. A dark berry fruit finish lingers on the palate, complementing the rich flavors of this beautiful wine. Keep an eye out for the Rombauer Tasting Event at Enoteca on October 19th and 20th! White Wine Panther Creek Melón 2006 (De Ponte Vineyard, Willamette Valley, Oregon) - The Melón grape is the same as France’s Muscadet, and is also known as Melón de Bourgogne. Until the early 1980’s, Melón in the United States was often misidentified as Pinot blanc. Panther Creek’s Melón comes from the 29-year old vines of De Ponte Vineyard near Dundee, Oregon. The 2003 DePonte Melón is rich and flavorful, with fresh white fruit flavors and crisp acidity. This dry, yet fruity wine, finds a passionate following with lovers of shellfish and seafood. Melón ages well from 5-7 years, developing a supple, complex palate with subtle flavors and good length. The color is of bright straw, and the nose brings out beeswax, pears and yellow flowers. On the palate, this wine is richly textured with pears, peaches, nasturtiums and a touch of sea salt.

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Domaine de Christia Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Rhone, France) - 93 Point rating by Wine Specatator! 92 Point rating by Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)! The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is deep ruby/purple in color, opulent, full-bodied, and rich, with notes of smoke, blackberry, cassis, garrigue, and pepper as well as chocolate. It is deep, full-bodied, with sweet tannin, moderate acidity, and superb precision and overall balance. Accessible for a 2005, it can be drunk during its first 10-12 years of life. We’ve tasted several Chateauneuf-du-Pape blends, and what stands out with this one is it’s emphasis on fruit flavors. Traditionally CdP’s show more leather, tobacco, and similar masculine flavors, whereas this one, after it opens up for a while, shows quite a bit of fruit alongside the other flavors.

Beer Club

Koningshoeven Quadrupel Beer Club members receive 2 - 750ml bottles of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase. Russell has been getting a lot of feedback on Beer Club beers from those who show up for Freestyle tasting events. We are able to sample and taste beer and get a feel for where the Club Members would like the Club to go from this. Check out the Freestyle announcement below if you haven’t participated yet! This month’s Club selection was tasted by a few members in an unscheduled Freestyle tasting, and it was called “Good.” Koningshoeven is the brewery also known as “La Trappe” outside of the USA. There are only seven Trappist beers in the world, and Koningshoeven is the only one outside of Belgium. Brewed at the Abbey of “Onze Levee Vrouwe van Koningshoeven” in the Dutch province of North Brabant, where, since 1884 the fathers have been brewing a truly glorious beer for the real connoisseur using traditional methods.
Koningshoeven Glassware Available! Enoteca was able to secure a limited supply of official Koningshoeven glassware. This beautiful glass is an optional add-on for club members for only $4.99 each. Koningshoeven Double also available. It was hard to choose between three Koningshoeven beers for the club. We settled on the Triple and Quadruple, but got some of the Dubbel for the shelf just in case we have any beer fans that want to try them all.
Fine Beer Koningshoeven Quadruple Trappist Ale (Berkel-Enschot, The Netherlands) - This is a Winter Warmer seasonal beer. The Quadrupel sits at the top of the Koningshoeven range. At 10% alcohol by volume, it’s a big deep amber beer with a rich, warming flavor. Full-bodied and mild, slightly sweet and just a hint of bitterness round out the palate. In the nose you will detect fruit, a faint, pleasant yeastiness and just a touch of resiny hops. Although Quadrupel is delicious when consumed fresh, it can benefit from years of aging in a cool, dark place. The flavor of aged Quadrupel is reminiscent of port. 10% ABV Bottle Conditioned Fine Beer Koningshoeven Triple Trappist Ale (Berkel-Enschot, The Netherlands) - A rich, brassy golden in color and sporting a slightly off-white foam, Koningshoeven Tripel is the hoppiest of the Koningshoeven range, displaying a beautiful balance of hoppy bitterness and full malt flavor. You will notice spices, fruit and hops in the nose. On the palate Tripel is slightly bitter, spicy and refreshing. The style “Tripel” generally means a beer that is golden in color and strong. Like most Belgian or Benelux ales, it’s also bottle conditioned (as are all Koningshoeven ales) which means that living yeast are in each bottle and produce the carbonation in the package. This yeast is normal and healthy, as well as rich in vitamins and minerals. If you notice a thin layer of sediment in each bottle, it’s due to this yeast. 8% ABV Bottle Conditioned
Check Out! In order to keep track of your wine and beer, we use a “Check Out” procedure. When you come to pick up your wine & beer, please momentarily stop by the counter and check out. Club members receive receipts by email.

TimberRock Trio Release Party at Enoteca

TimberRock TimberRock Mark your calendars for 4-8 pm Friday, October 12th, for TimberRock’s Trio Release Party at Entoeca! We will be tasting the complete TimberRock lineup with winemaker Dr. Kevin Rogers. We will be featuring the new release from TimberRock, the Trio. This is TimberRock’s first blend. TimberRock is Post Falls’ native winery making quality hand-crafted wines from Washington State fruit. Wine Club Members Dr. Kevin and Michelle Rogers (Bin #100) are the winemakers and Kevin moonlights as a Veterinarian at Kootenai Animal Hospital. The picture to the right is Dr. Rogers forklifting some grapes into the Euroselect de-stemming machine at a recent “Crush” party. Some Enoteca staff and Club Members partook, and we look forward to whatever wine is made from the Syrah grapes crushed that day.

Rombauer Tasting Event October 19th and 20th

Rombauer Wines Rombauer. To those who enjoy Chardonnay this name evokes senses of a well balanced lightly toasted oaked white wine with creaminess, tropical fruits, a hint of vanilla. It’s a Chardonnay that people are used to jumping on when it’s available, because supplies dry up quickly. As Premier Red Club members will soon find out, Rombauer also makes an amazing Zinfandel. Other Rombauer fans know well that Rombauer also makes an incredible Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and reserve “Diamond” Cabernet Sauvignon. Enoteca will be tasting out the Rombauer lineup with Darin Roberson of Vehrs on October 19th, from 4-8. We will also be pouring these wines on the less crowded Saturday the 20th from 12-5. Hold the date so you can come taste and enjoy.

Ayinger German Beer Tasting Event - Oktober 20th

Saturday, October 20th, at 6 p.m. Enoteca will be hosting an Ayinger German beer tasting event! Kevin Olsonberg of Odom and will be on hand to answer questions and facilitate a great tasting experience. This is one of the Merchant du Vin beers that Jhon Gilroy mentioned at the Samuel Smith tasting. Brauerei Aying has a long-standing reputation for excellence in beer and hospitality. Although Ayinger Brewery was founded in a picturesque village 25 kilometers from Munich in 1878, the site of the Ayinger Gasthaus Brewery Hotel has been one of Bavaria’s most famous restaurants for more than 500 years. Ayinger beers are characterized by their delicious balanced maltiness (not found in beers of the major Munich breweries). Unlike the mass-market brewers, Ayinger uses a significant portion of locally-grown barley and wheat to produce their beers. In a land of wonderful breweries, Ayinger is considered a benchmark of excellence. For the past four years Ayinger has placed first in every category entered in the World Beer Championships. Tickets are $10 per person, register in advance. Club members can have the ticket simply added to their Bin, and anyone can order tickets by coming into Enoteca in Post Falls, calling us at 208-457-9885 or sending us some email: service@corkjoy.com!

About the Authors

Back by request, it’s About the Authors! Russell and Sarah usually don’t have much to report, but now that we know it’s a boy, and we’ve had time to think about it… a name has settled in. If you want to know what it is, you’ll have to stop by and ask, or keep reading the newsletter. As the weather has cooled down, we’ve really been enjoying the fall in north Idaho. Rain has returned, the wine shop thermostat has been switched from “cool” to “heat” and Russell is allowed to wear his sweaters again. He’s also been drinking darker beers, and redder wines, like the 1999 Villa Erbice Amarone we had with dinner the other night. Lets just say he called the supplier and ordered every last bottle they have for the Enoteca shelf. Sarah’s starting her third trimester, which means her ribs are being assaulted, and she’s looking beautiful as always.
