March Wine & Beer Club is in!

The wine and beer for this month’s club has arrived and will be in your bin on Friday, March 2nd! Not getting any of these great wines or beers this month? Learn about the Wine & Beer Club? [Click Here]
This weekend is Taste of Club! Tasting is from 4-7 Friday night, Saturday from 12-7. The cost is $10 per flight, either red or white, $5 per glass, and $10 for the Anniversary Club Red, glass pour only. The lineup for Club and Tasting:

Vintage Club

White Wine Coeur d’Alene Cellars No. 6 White 2006 (Columbia Valley, WA) - Over 50 blending trials went into developing this perfect white wine blend. “I think it’s one of the best wines we’ve ever made.” says Kimber Harris of CDA Cellars. From the famous Columbia Valley fruit used in all Coeur d’Alene Cellars wines, this unique blend combines Viognier’s fruity, floral aromas and flavors, with Semillon’s round notes of honey and figs, balanced with Riesling’s springy floral and crisp acidity in an original package. The trademark watercolor on this CDA Cellars’ label features snow-laden teasels from the Palouse, reflecting the fine art of wine. Great with seafood, Asian food, pork dishes. Red Wine Orphelin - Limited from Chateau St. Michelle 2004 (Columbia Valley, WA) - From CSM: “We grow many different Rhone varieties at our Columbia Valley vineyards, many of which don’t have a home when it comes time to blending. These varieties, such as Mourvedre and Grenache, are some of the more interesting varieties winemakers get to work with, and it always seemed a shame to have to blend away these orphans. Orphelin was born by trying to create a true Rhone-style blend from these wines, while showcasing Washington’s true potential for Rhone varieties. This is an interesting wine with bright raspberry aromas accented by white pepper notes. Cinsault contributes a rustic, bramble character to the blend.”

Reserve Club

White Wine Tre Donne Quattro White 2004 (Piedmont, Italy) - This wine is brought to you as a direct import from Italy. Availability is extremely limited. It is an excellent white blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. The Lequio family started to grow vines in 1850. Today the wine is made by three sisters: Rosanna, Daniela, and Antonella and their husbands: Piernicola, Mauro, and Gianni. The brand Tre Donne (Three women) is dedicated to the 3 sisters, the latest generation of winemakers. Quattro is the wine dedicated to the women’s 4 (combined) daughters! Red Wine Layer Cake Shiraz 2005 (Barossa Valley, Australia) - Sarah’s birthday is in March, and we’re serving cake. Layer Cake to be more specific! We were blown away by this wine’s dark, dense and inky varietally correct Shiraz-ness, and bountiful dark fruit without being overtly jammy. The mouthfeel is smooth and delicious with mocha notes and not too weighty or heavy. The finish is perfectly clean and neat.

Premier Club

White Wine Stag’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (Napa Valley, California) - A delicate perfume of lemon, pear, and honeysuckle introduce this wine’s sophisticated charm while subtle notes of pineapple, tangerine, and lemongrass weave their way through the glass. On first taste, flavors of passion fruit and mandarin orange are tinged by flinty mineral tones and refreshing acidity. Serve this wine on a sunny day with oysters or a spinach salad with warm pancetta, toasted walnuts, and goat cheese topped with light citrus vinaigrette. Red Wine Amity Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2005 (Willamette Valley, Oregon) - This hand-crafted wine from Oregon is an excellent expression of the potential of Pinot Noir. Amity has become very popular and difficult to come by, so we consider it to be a special treat to be able to share this with our club. A complex nose with aromas of black cherry, blueberry & raspberry, mixed with notes of earth & spice, leads into a smooth soft wine. This is a wine that will go well with duck, lamb, barbecued salmon, wild mushrooms and black beans.

Anniversary Club Red

Red Wine Gargiulo Vineyard Merlot 2003 (Napa Valley, California) - 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A garnet colored Merlot with a bright berry and cherry nose. Rounded mouth feel with pie cherry and a pleasant dryness complimented by oaky vanilla. The long finish is impressive.

Beer Club!

Beer Club members receive 4 - 22oz bottles this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase. Fine Beer Rogue Kells Irish Lager (Oregon) - St. Patrick’s Day coming soon! Kells Irish Lager is a European-style pilsner brewed with Great Western 2-row, French Carapilsner malt, Sterling hops and Czech pilsner yeast. Kells Irish Lager undergoes one week of primary and 5 weeks of secondary fermentation and weighs in at 11.5 degrees plato with 25 International Bittering Units. Kells Irish Lager was awarded “Lager of the Year, International Section for packaged beer’” at the Australian International Beer Awards in 2001! Fine Beer Rogue Chipotle (Oregon) - Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a an dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s American Amber Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked jalapeno (chipotle) chile peppers. Deep amber in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Chipolte (smoked jalapeno) Peppers. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan! Fine Beer Rogue Morimoto Soba (Oregon) - Soba (also known as buckwheat) is not a type of wheat but a member of the rhubard family (a fruit, not a grain!) Soba has been a longtime staple of Japanese cuisine because of its nutritional value. Buckwheat is high in potassium, phosphorous, vitamin B (50 percent more than wheat) and protein, and its virtually fat-free. The fruits of buckwheat plant are like small beechnuts, which are milled to separate the edible groats from the dark brown hulls. The groats are then roasted and used more or less like a grain (a good example is Kasha). Morimoto Soba Ale is brewed with Roasted Buckwheat, Pale malt, Munich Malt, 13-17 Carastan Malt, and Crystal Hops. (Note, this beer contains Gluten.) The flavor is unique, toasty-nutty sensation with medium body and good hop bitterness. Fine Beer Deschutes Hop Henge (Oregon) - The latest in Deschutes Bond Street Series, Hop Henge, got bumped up to Imperial status this year. With a few more IBU’s (International Bitterness Units) than last year’s version, this IPA has a monumental amount of hops coming in just under the century mark for IBU’s. Two and one half pounds of Centennial, Cascade, and Northern Brewer hops are added, per beer barrel, and another half pound is used in the dry hopping process giving Hop Henge a whopping 95 IBU rate. A hearty malt bill, consisting of Crystal, Pale and Carastan malts, creates a biscuity note while building a dense base supporting the mammoth hop presence. Alc. By Vol. 8.1% ~ IBUs 95
Stout lovers alert: Check out Deschutes The Abyss, an Imperial Stout aged on French Oak and Burbon barrels, and in very limited supply. As of this email, about 15 bottles are still available at $5.99 each. We had 36 a few days ago. It was a little too limited to make it into the club, and maybe a little to strong. Early reports of dark beer mania are beginning to come in.
Club members receive receipts by email.
Check Out! In order to keep track of your wine and beer, we use a “Check Out” procedure. When you come to pick up your wine & beer, please momentarily stop by the counter and check out.

2004 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape

The highest rated Chateauneuf du Pape of the 2004 vintage is Beaucastel. We have a limited supply available now for only $91.99 per bottle, or $82.79 each for wine club members. But what do the experts say? 96 pts, Wine Spectator: “Thoroughly primal, with a torrent of raspberry and boysenberry fruit rushing forth, this only shows hints of its full range, with licorice, incense, graphite and mocha flavors fluttering in the background. It’s also got ironclad structure, and a long finish that shows great cut and grip. Shows none of the severe tannins of the 2003. Best from 2009 through 2025.” February 2007. 92-95 pts, Robert Parker: “The 2004 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is far superior to the 2003, a wine of considerable richness, tremendous intensity, and impressive definition and length. Usually a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 40% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Counoise, and other varietals, the 2004 shows a dense purple color to the rim and a big, sweet nose of licorice, blackberries, pepper, Asian tea, spice, and a balsamic note. The wine has fabulous richness, great freshness, full body, and sweet, velvety-textured tannins. This wine should be approachable young, but hit its peak in about 7-8 years, and last for two decades or more.” February 2006 To have a bottle or two added to your Bin, call us at 208-457-9885, or email service@corkjoy.com!

Help the Club Members

If you look on the Club Member bin’s, you’ll see one labeled “Buzzard and Dog,” #138. Tina and Ben have had a very trying few months. In December, when there was a severe storm and high winds, a tree landed on their home. Ben was inside at the time and Tina had to dig him out. They’ve been living in a temporary trailer while they sort out the mess and put things back together. We heard from them earlier last month as they needed to cancel their wine club subscription to save money. We spoke with them when they came in last weekend, the first time Ben’s been mobile enough to do so, and found out they decided to continue being part of the club. Seeing them talk about their recent journey showed us a lot about their character, and their support is especially valuable considering the trying times they’ve seen. We want to extend our gratitude, and thank them. Enoteca has given a gift of “Mad Dogs and Englishmen,” a wine that seems to fit their nicknames, and we extend our prayers.
