U.S. to Overtake France … in Wine Consumption!
According to Chris Mercer of FoodandDrinkEurope.com, the United States will overtake the French yet again, this time in wine consumption. Don’t forget that France is the country that let the Nazi’s come in and take their land, but put up the strongest fight trying to protect their artwork and their wine! French wine drinking is down 2% last year while American wine drinking is up 3% in the same time period. In Britian the wine runs freely with a 5% spike in consumption. Italy is still the top exporter of wine, although it is slipping slightly giving way to newcomers like Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. The Italians are experts at value added exporting, and always have been. Just think of what comes from Italy: leather, wine, the Godfather, and fashion! French wine exports dropped 11% in the last 3 years.
Worldwide, wine consumption is up .1% and if we had every winebibber on hand for a Friday and Saturday wine tasting at Enoteca, we would need to come up with 23.56 billion liters of wine! That’s billion with a capital B. What do you think of this news? Feel free to post your comments and continue reading the Wineaux blog!
