The lineup for Club and Tasting:
Vintage Club
Winemaker Greg Fries works with the goal of producing a wine that shows distinct varietal character. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the Desert Wind vineyard tends to be luxurious in both texture and fruit. This wine has been balanced through oak barrel aging and has firmness from the oak tannins which allow the wine to drink well throughout its life span.
94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot
Sauvignon Blanc and a grape variety called Gros Manseng are blended together to make this excellent summer white wine from France. The crisp acidity, tart complexion, and citrus flavors of the Sauvignon Blanc are balanced by the structure and backbone of the Gros Manseng. Try this with seafood or chilled on the deck.
80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Gros Manseng
Reserve Club
King Estate is known for it’s high quality Pinot Noir, and this is a project to create an excellent, varietally correct Pinot from Oregon at an affordable price.
The aroma of this wine exhibits bright bing cherry, strawberry, oak char, and pomegranate. The mouthfeel shows black cherry and strawberry, light oak.
This wine has a lovely grapefruit nose, hinting at citrus and fig nuances. It is wonderfully full and round in the mouth with crispness, great acidity and good balance. This wine is loaded with mouthwatering flavors. Because of its fine balance, this wine is excellent with a wide variety of foods, ranging from spicy Asian to seafood and pasta or just to sip by itself.
100% Sauvignon Blanc from Oakville and Yountville
Premier Club
(Seven Hills Vineyards, Columbia Valley, Washington)
King Estate, known for their world class Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, has teamed up with Washington State wine grape growers from the Seven Hills Vineyards, both the East and West side vineyards, to create this excellent Cabernet Sauvignon.
On the nose this wine is a harmonious blend of red fruits, caramel, and chocolate with a hint of pepper. Richly structured, the wine resonates with flavors of cherry and plum, and hints of anise and cocoa lingering on a long spicy finish.
96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot
(Lewis Estate Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Washington)
White peach, honeysuckle and hints of baking spices roll around on a richly woven palate with just enough minerality and structure to hold up to foods on the spicy side of life.
This wine is done in a slightly off-dry style, which means it has a faint hint of sweetness, but that won’t be the first thing you notice. The incredible flavors predominate, with the terroir, or sense of place where the grapes are grown, coming through nicely.
100% Riesling
Anniversary Club Red
First, the winemaker. Jed Steele was the winemaker for Kendal Jackson in the 1980’s, and there gained a reputation for the KJ Chardonnay, which is still the highest volume selling Chardonnay in the US. His own winery is called Steele, and this is one example of his work.
Second the horse. Stymie was a famous racehorse in mid-twentieth century American history. Once Stymie gained the lead on the track he would never relinquish the spot. This trait was so pronounced that “stymie” has become part of our vocabulary. In 1950 Jed’s father, a newspaperman, wagered a bet on Stymie that paid off well. So well, in fact, that the winnings financed the Steele family’s move from New York to San Francisco. This new Stymie label is reserved for rare, small production wines of the highest quality Jed Steele produces.
Finally, the wine. This first vintage of Steele Stymie Founder’s Reserve Merlot has a rich, deep, dark red color and firm body. The wine exhibits aromas of chocolate, jammy fruit, tobacco, and a hint of pepper. The palate reveals a rich, well-structured wine with flavors of ripe red currants, a peppery mid-palate, and just a hint of coffee. It has an excellent, long-lasting finish and smooth tannins. This superb Merlot is the perfect “special occasion” wine and pairs well with big hearty foods. Exceptional with any preparation of lamb or beef, steaks, cherry-wood grilled venison chops, ragout, and any other full-flavored dish. You will be missing out if you don’t try this Merlot with chocolate.
Beer Club
Beer Club members receive 3 bottles of beer this month! Beer Club selections are not open for the tasting event, but a few bottles are available for purchase.Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich, and well, sinful, you might feel certain that you are to be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about taking a sip. This is being paired with a beer (see below) composed of two beers named Salvation. Hopefully that helps.
Brewed in the authentic historical style of an Imperial Russian Stout, this beer is massive, intensely aromatic, with notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness, and alcohol, and heavy on the palate. This brew goes where few can, and fewer still even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect Stone’s version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier.
This stout cellars especially well. Stone recommends getting a case of it, and opening a bottle every three to six months to enjoy the journey of the brew. Enoteca can accomodate you if you take them up on it.
10.8% ABV, 22 oz. Bottle
A couple of brewers got together, made friends, and then realized they both made a beer of the same name. Adam Avery from Avery Brewing in Colorado and Vinnie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Company in California didn’t use the same recipe, but they both brewed a beer called Salvation. You can get the Avery version on the shelf at Enoteca. As we’ve seen with wine brands, spirits brands, and even some beer brands, a conflict like this usually results in steep lawyer bills and a drawn out trademark infringement lawsuit. But these are brew nuts.
What these guys decided to do is Collaborate, not Litigate. The resultant brew, made by both brewers at the Avery facility, is a celebration of the spirit of good beer. It is a perfect blend of the two Salvation’s.
All profits from this joint venture will fund a return educational trip to Belgium for the two brewers involved, Tomme (Port Brewing), Sam (Dogfish Head Brewing) and Rob (Allagash Brewing). This pilgrimage will enable us to learn even more about traditional brewing techniques to combine with their already strange and unique styles here in America. Pick up some Dogfish Head and Allagash on the Enoteca shelf as well.
This is a cloudy, dark amber brew that can be best classified as a Belgian Dark Strong Ale. The nose includes some spice notes such as cardemom and nutmeg, and the flavor balances the malty with the hoppy. Note the yeast complexion, which includes some fruitiness.
8.72% ABV, 22 oz. Bottle
Hop Rod Rye is a high perofrmance, turbo charged, alcohol burnin’ monster ale with dual overhead hop injection, made with 18% rye. This is a non-filtered ale that may include sediment in the bottle. It’s a hoppy beer, and the inclusion of Rye brew adds a depth and complexity to the flavor making it unique. Don’t forget the Bear Republic Beer Tasting this month, details below.
8% ABV, 22 oz. Bottle
